    Default tryes ?

    hi all

just need the above answered please,am due to put some tyres on but am bit confused , have got 215 * 50* 17 on atm but would i be right in thinking that if i put 235 * 45 * 17 on the car will handle a bit better.

    thanks clembo

225 45 r17 is the alternative size recommended by VX, it's in the hand book. 235's would be pushing it

Depends on the make of tyre.

Also in the wet a wider tyre could actually make the handling worse as you've a larger footprint on the road which could aquaplain far more than a narrow tyre.

But as said by John, the alternate size for 215/50/17 is 225/45/17.

hi thanks for the reply have been Lizzy of late, have just done the tyre calculator size if i go for 225/45/17 the car will be running 1.9 mph faster than the slandered tyres, but put in 235/45/17 its just 1/2 mph faster so my thinking its better for speedo accuracy,or is that not the case.

    thanks clembo

Presumably you actually mean a % rather than mph variance

I posted about this before, changing from 215/50R17 to 225/45R17
My car now runs faster than the displayed speed, but it is still within the Vehicle Construction Act tolerance of 10%

235's are only recommended by VX for 19" wheels and then only with a 35% side profile - i.e. 235/35/19

    225's with a 45% side profile are recommended for 17" and 18" wheels - i.e 225/45/18 or 225/45/17

    215's with a 50% side profile are recommended for 17" wheels - i.e 215/50/17

I can chip in here as I have just replaced the original fit Goodyear Eagle NCT5 which were 215/50/17 with Michelin Primacy HP 225/45/17.

Even though they are wider, the lower profile still makes the sidewall smaller, and overall it does make the wheels look a bit smaller but I will get used to that as it's only a bit.

The speedo can be corrected if you have access to a Vaux-Com programmer. You can program in a different tyre size and the speedo reading will be correct again. Doesn't make a lot of difference though.

The handling is transformed by the way. These Michelins are great, there is less roll in corners and a lot more grip than the Goodyears. Also I am still getting the comfort I like from my 'old man' elite spec. Nice and quiet too.
