    Question Declaring mods to insurance

I called my insurace company the other day to declare the new grille and the spoiler that I now have on the car. They didn't give a stuff about the grille, but noted down the spoiler, and charged me £15. Not for the spoiler but for changing the policy details.

So, what do other people declare and how much does it increase the premium by??
Or more specifically, how much extra for adding a tuning box and changing for bigger alloys

    Cheers
    Paul

If you're fitting parts which are fitted by the manufacturer, like irmscher kit, you can generally get away with not declaring it by blagging it as 'standard equipment', its a bit of a delicate area though and the insurance company won't pay out for these 'optional extras' in the event of a loss.

Best to declare all mods (Performance or exterior styling) to avoid the chance of giving the insurance company a chance to get out of paying out in case of a claim. In the industry its called 'Disclosure of Material Facts', and non-disclosure can result in rejected claims and reduction to third party only cover!!!

    Interesting point ...

On one of my cars I have:

Standard factory fitted Bi Xenon Headlights
Standard factory fitted Colour Satellite Navigation
Standard factory fitted Premium Sound CD/Stereo

The extras costed a lot of money

I haven't declared these to my insurer .... nor thought that I needed to

These are proper 'factory fit' options and don't need to be declared... its only the 'dealer fit' ones that the insurance company need to know about.

    Thanks Jamie,

That is what I thought !

I once had a Vectra B LS ... I told the insurance that it had facotry fitted Vx alloy wheels, the operator said " we are not interested .... this will not affect your premium"

    Charming !

when i had my vectra b sri 2.2, not long ago i unavoidably ran in the back of someone on the m6, less than 24 hours before that i fitted an irmscher grille, smashed it to bits....but when it came back from being repaired there to my surprise was a brand new irmscher grille bolted on!
sometimes you can get away with it!

My insurance went up £105.00 for my grille and spoilers, didn`t think I would get off with Steinmetz as standard fit *lol* . The real sting though, excess up from £100 to £500 !!!!

    Unhappy

I Had Probs With Four Insurance Companies...would Insure The Car With All The Irmscher Stuff And The Alloys...........but When I Said The Windows Were Tinted, Said No! When Asked Why, I Was Advised Eg If I Was In An Accident And The Fire Brigade Came Out, They Cant Break The Windows In..so I Hit Back With The Fact, That Are All Front Screens Not Laminate, And Also Do The Firebrigade Not Have Cutting Gear To Go Through Glass??? I Told One Company, That The Previous Owner Had Been Insured With Them, And They Said." Well If We Insured Him, It Was The First And Last Time We Have Done It" I Went To Adrian Flux Insurance Who Were Great And Good Price...but Even Though I Paid It Of In One Go, And Have Still Got About 10 Months To Run, If I Cancel Now, I Only Get About 1/4 Of Premium Back.....

Short period cancellation rates.... I used to love stinging customers with these when I was in insurance, it was one of the only pleasures of the job!!!

1 month = 70% Refund, 2 months = 60% 3=50% 4=40% 5=30% 6=20% 7=10% >7 months = nil refund...... then slap a cancellation admin fee on top of that and most people get no money back if they cancel there policy after 6 months. Its all in the small print, and completely air tight legal daylight robbery!

Glad I'm not in that industry anymore!
