Strange inductive / exhaust sound

Don't know if anyone else gets this with there 2.2 petrol (Z22SE engine), although a bit difficult to describe, but basically e.g in 3rd or 4th gear and say under 2,000 rpm and just on slight throttle I can hear this strange noise , like a sort whirring sound , but not what I would say is anything like a bearing sound but more like induction / exhaust type of thing, if I accelerate or keep the revs up over 2,000 rpm it disappears; baring in mind the exhaust is fine and no holes, only thing I can think of is that it might be down to the airbox mod' and putting the longer air intake back on (had put the shorter one on yonks ago, but refiited longer one some few months back) , I knew I shouldn't have had my ears surringed a while back as I'm starting to hear allsorts of strange noises with this damn car!!LOL

Does it sound like air escaping? If it does i would put my house on the exhuast flexi pipe at the front having a crack in it. You wont see it unless you have it on a ramp and get a lever on it to give it a move around.

Thanks for your reply mate, I guess you could say it does sound a bit like that mate, I'll need to get that checked I think, that's if I have this damn thing long enough ,as I'm so close to getting shot of it or burning it LOL especially the way I'm feeling about it at the moment.

They get a bit like that lol. Once they hit a certain age things just crop up. The front exhuast section costs a few hundred and is a dealer only part BUT any exhaust shop like MIJ or simons will cut out and weld a new one in for around £60 so its not to sore on the pocket.
