    Default Emissions Light

Quite some time ago now I posted on here about my emissions light coming on. Well, after a recent (non dealer) service I was told that the main culprit for this error is the EGR valve.

The mechanic said as the car is still under a Perry's warranty I could take it back and get it done under warranty, do the work myself, or partly blank it off.

I can't remember the code reader results now, but he definetely said the EGR valve. He also mentioned that the dealer would almost certainy try to rip me off in 2 ways.

One by charging an extortionate amount for plugging the car into their reader, and two, they will almost certainly try and wring some cash out of me for labour too. It aint gonna happen!

I know I had replies on here to buy a code reader, and now I may be in a position to do so. So can I have opinions on the following link please? Also if anyone knows of any better readers I'd appreciate your input.

With the emissions light coming on, the EGR is likely to be stuck closed, or not opening fully - this could be removed, stripped and cleaned (at little to no cost) which could sort out the problem.

Thanks for that Dan. I have just this minute been and looked at the location of the EGR valve. It looks a doddle to get at.

I'm off work from the 9th of next month so inbetween decorating and other household jobs the wife has lined up for me I'll give it a clean out. And maybe even order the gasket kit and blanking plate too...

    Cheers

Don't be too disheartened if this doesn't fix issue though, the egr valve on these are a complete nuisance. The egr valve can appear to be working ok - ie the mechanisim moves freely - but it doesn't guarantee a fully functional egr valve.

Got ya Gazza. To be honest it doesn't bother me all that much, I just like things to be spot on if possible, IE no warning lights!

I won't be fooled into letting a Vauxhall stealer look at it though. Not after they charged me a fiver to change a rear indicator bulb for the MOT. I fell for that one, no more though!

Just an update regarding my EGR valve....

I've finally had it changed today for £135. The garage got me a genuine dealer part, and interestingly the pattern part EGR valve is dearer than the dealer part...?

Anyway, I decided to have it changed after leaving it for months and months (cos I'm as tight as a camels arse in a sandstorm) and the fumes were starting to leak into my car....diagnosed as an EGR fault. Due to the fact that the EGR wasn't functioning as it should, gases were leaking away instead of being recycled into the turbo/inlet (that's how it was explained, correct me if I'm wrong!)

The smell outside my car (and inside) when the engine was running, mainly in traffic ticking over was quite pungent, no smell now the valve has been replaced. Result.

It needed to be changed anyway as the emissions light was getting on my nerves, and would there have been issues with the MOT, due to the leaking gases?

Has anyone else had this "pungent" smell with a blocked EGR?

this could only happen if there's a leak somewhere in the system.

did you take it to Vx before the fumes arrived or after?

Thanks for the reply, sorry for the delay re-posting. I didn't actually take the car to VX. I don't trust the dealers to do a good job for a fair price. Take note all VX dealers?

I used my local garage, the one I have used for years with no problems. The smell is still there after the valve replacement, although not as bad. So possibly a leak somewhere. I'll get it checked out after xmas.

It's running a lot better since the EGR was changed too, smoother and quieter so at least thats something!
