Think it is just what each council decides although the yellow/grey is probably most common. In every case they all serve the same purpose.

I thought after a court challenge years ago, the rear of the camera HAD TO BE yellow?

Think it has to be visible - ie red and yellow flourescent strips.

There in the process of putting 4 up on our road, 2 are bright yellow and 2 are grey. I believe the different colours determine who gets the cash, police for one and local government for the other.

It depends on who owns the camera and it's purpose

In some areas they are council owned, operated by the Police
Where this applies they can be ANY colour
Revenue from fines goes to central government

In some areas they are council owned, operated by the Police, on behalf of a Safety Camera Partnership
Revenue from fines remains with the Safety Camera Partnership
Where this applies the camera must be visible from at least 200 yards
Any such method can be used to ensure the camera is visible, however this is normally that the box containing the detection device is yellow
The supporting post can be any colour
For a talivan this usually means the van must be white in colour with a speed camera logo of at least 60cm x 90cm on at least two sides

If the camera is in a Safety Camera Partnership area but does not meet that requirement then the fine cannot be retained by the Safety Camera Partnership, that is the only difference

what do you make of the average speed cams along m73, travel by them every day and loads of people inc proffessional drivers (lorry drivers/white van man) ignore the 40 mph limit, and they are not just passing one and taking the next exit they are passing by 2 giving the average speed if they are working.

    M73?, I assume you mean the A80 / M80 Temporary Speed Limit Order 2009

Hint, it helps if you know which ones are working and which ones are within the detection zones

Equally, I think I posted a few months ago about the number of people detected in one month; shockingly low

The main issue is the lack of places for the Police to pull people over, and hence the reduced number of patrols
However, this was revised last month with a new policy and procedure, and was put back to its previous level
