they usually snap at the handle end, can you see the inner cable and maybe get some mole grips on it? other than that i'm not sure, but i'm sure someone will be along with the answer

found this in an old thread from 2009, it might help,,,,,,,

    1. remove front bumper
    2. undo the bottom radiator mount bolts
    3. get your hand up the front of your aircon rad and pull the half rubber, half plastic cover as far towards the front of the car as you can (its the cover which covers the bonnet release mech)
    4. use a torch with your left hand whilst lying on the ground. look up from the bottom in between your radiator and intercooler (if fitted). if you have moved the plastic/rubber cover correctly you should see the striker.
    5. with your right hand and a long screw driver go over the top of the radaitor with it whilst looking from underneath, you should be able to work the catch spring.

best to have the car jacked up and dont smash your grille because it wont help much.
Mine is a diesel petrol setup might be different.

was just thinking, this wouldn't work on a facelift as you need the bonnet open to get the bumper off, so maybe on facelifts the only way is to smash the grille,

Thumbs up Bonnet wont open !

Went to open my bonnet only to find the release lever very slack. Rang dealer who said to bring in and pay us £60 to remove undertray and release catch with a long rod. Decided to have a go myself ! You can actually feel the catch if you have thinish arms and wrists. We used a 6" length of welding rod with a hook shape bent on the one end. Its not easy but it is possible. The bonnet released eventually and i then noticed the cabe was very slack. You must remove this slack by undoing the cable clamp (T25 screw) and sliding the cable until there is no freeplay at the lever in the car.
It was the nipple that had popped out of the eye and not broken thankfully.
Moral : check the freeplay at the lever regularly !
