    Unhappy engine management light

    Hey guys.

Right i've tried having a read but i dont think anybody seems to have the exact same problem as me.

Today i was driving along, came onto nice long national speed limit road and it was clear so naturally i had to put my foot down .

As i did this i got a drop in power and the car dropped into limp mode and the engine management light came on so when i could i pulled over and killed the ignition and that solved the problem.
After that i drove a good 50 mile round trip mostly on the motorway and exceeding 80 no problems..

So what im wondering is should i expect more of this problem ? should i get it plugged in asap or wait to see if it happens again ? and can anybody shed any light on how much im likely to pay to get it plugged in ?

Oh yeah and its the 1.9 CDTI (120) C shape veccy on a 55 plate

is it the estate?? or automatic box??

Obviously, the ecu has detected a fault with something....somewhere

Ideally, yes, you should get the fault code read....or buy yourself a reader, as you will be looking at anything from £40-£80 to get it plugged in depending on where you decide to take it.

The engine management light can come on for literally hundreds of reasons, but with it going into limp mode as well, its well worth getting it checked out!!

I have a fair bit of experience of limp mode......and I'm not talking about in the sack!!!

yep, the only way to know what it might be is have the code read. It will point you in the right direction, as bafoo said,,,,,,,,literally hundreds of reasons!!!

    Thanks guys.

How much are the readers you can buy for home use ? I heard someone mention those before but never paid much attention. Im happy to get it plugged in if i know the garage isnt likely to try ripping me off with some major fault thats actaully a quick fix...

clean your egr valve and boost valve first

while your there check all your hoses.

without a code reader i's say this sound's EGR related but we've been surprised before

He's spot on. Just asked if it was the estate as it sounded quite like my DPF problem, but I'm pretty sure your vec won't have one.

The cleaning of the boost sensor and EGR are a fairly simple D.I.Y job, I know, i've done them and I'm no mechanic!! Just follow the good guides on here, they're invaluable....unless your loaded!!!

Cheap as chips matey.....cheaper than one visit to a cheap garage!!

And believe me, you'll get p£%sed off paying a garage £40 a time , every time your engine management lights up!!

I read my own codes, then type them into the "search" bar on here, and 99% of the time, there will be someone on here who's experienced the same thing, so you'll know pretty soon if its a quick fix.............or get your credit card out!!

Thanks a lot everyone ! I've been on ebay to have a look already.

I may have confused things tho, i forgot to mention its the car n spanner light not the actual symbol that looks like an engine.
