Default 1.9 cdti 150 temp issue

    hope someone can help.

last week i noticed my temp gauge was jumping quickly from about 50 deg upto 85. it went back to 85 or so within 5-10 secs but 20 miles later it done the same again. when i got home i cleaned the connector on the sensor at the thermostat housing and it hasn't done it since.

however i have been noticing the car is running very slightly hotter the last month or so for no apparent reason. the car has always sat at 85 on the nose but lately it's crept upto 86/87 on the mway and 90 coming up hills through the gears. if i free wheel the car out of gear down a hill the temp will start to drop slowly which i again assume is normal

i realise the above sounds normal but it's not normal to my car as in 3 years ownership it's always been at 85 so far as i know. i admit i'm watching it like a hawk now so it maybe always done this but it's certainly 2/3 degrees warmer than it was last time i remember....or i'm paranoid because watching it like a hawk now.

i have checked the thermostat is opening with watching the expansion bottle. there is no heat drop off when i put the fans on full with hot air. i bled the cooling system just incase infront of the manifold but was ok.

if i put the fans on full and drive normal it will go down to about 80/81.

again all sounds normal????? but just wondering as the temp gauge going gaga has me paranoid about it.

FYI the car has 48k on it and FVSH.

    maybe i'm worrying over nothing

    cheers

worrying over nothing,,, small fluctuations are normal as the thermostat ages and the outside air temp affects it too, it's probably done it before and you didn't notice. The time to worry is if it gets high and stays there, as i understand it, Veccy's have a back up warning light too if temp is exccessive.

i have never heard the fans coming on so it's not overheating. i'm just seeing if i'm on the road to a problem.

the reason for this is i just bought a boat and i'm about to use the car for towing and the last thing i want is temp issues and towing.

i have searched and searched and everything i have put above is "normal" but i can't help think it's a little hotter than my normal.

FYI it was 16 degrees today and been a little hotter last month or so. i don't recall this from last year but again, i wasn't watching the gauge like a hawk. i'm just surprised how much that gauge will move when driving normally. will rise and fall a degree or two.

thanks guys for the fastest reply ever??? lol

    cheers

Mine used to get up to temp eventually then fall faster than shares in BP when moving in a nice air-stream

most likely when you cleaned all the contacts up after the original fault you lowered the resistance across the sensor leading to the slightly higher reading my 2.2 DTi has always stayed around 86-87 when driving sensibly :-)

i wonder why it went down to 50 or so. i assume was iffy connection on the sensor and me cleaning it (i.e blow in the connector and reseat) has cured that issue......strange one.

i'll keep an eye on it and go from there.

    thanks guys, mind at rest.

i can go get my boat!

    cheers
