Default Notebook Help Please - Computer Guru Needed

My Son's Advent Milano notebook has went wrong after i tried to recover it using the techguys settings and when the notebook rebooted i got the below error

Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause.

    File: \Boot\BCD
    Status 0xc000000f

Now as far as i am led to believe from searching most of the night the BCD should only relate to Vista, however my sons notebook is windows XP

Stupidly when he got it at christmas i didnt make a recovery disc, and after spending £1.50 pm on the phone to the Techguys and after going through numerous automated actions for 15 mins they told me i would have to contact ADVENT and have a recovery disc sent out, or get the SW from somewhere

Can you guys help me out please,

I tried to install my own windows through booting from USB but it wont do this at all, as the bloke said it wont recognise my windows ,

bcd is used in vista to give it a boot manager and allow dual boot, XP does not need it so its odd that it is there. I guess they have tried to get you to use System restore. Does the system have a CD or DVD drive in it, when you say you are trying to install from USB are you trying from an image on a stick ir external CD/DVD etc?

the Milano looks like a netbook rather than a notebook. Don't these run XP embedded? hence it won't like your own version of XP.

I have copied my own windows recovery disc to a USB hoping that it will boot and fix the system errors, the Netbook wont boot from there after changing the boot sequences

have you tried booting to safe mode. that might at least get you into windows so you can archive valuable data while you work out what has gone wrong

press f8 on boot until it goes to safe mode

if you can't get there come back to us.

or if you do come back to us

    Question

On some systems there are hidden partitions with the recovery software, often x drive.

can you get to a command prompt. if so you might be able to execute recovery software

    ??

Its odd that you can't get F8 to work

have you tried pressing it repeatedly just as you power on the machine

    if not

then i'd guess its a clean install from slave drive ( be it dvd or flash )

in the absence of an Advent recovery CD, try pressing F11 on bootup to see if there is a hidden restore partition that you can activate.

You should be able to load XP onto it from another CD if you have an activation key otherwise get XPblack or XPglass and reload with that. I would try an external CD drive if you can find one and see if that works with an XP CD.. Your recovery CD you tried will only boot on a device it recognises..

Or you can download a recovery CD for a price from here
    http://recovery-cd.com/system/Advent...CD-452686.html

There could be one on rapidshare but i can't check from my location.. Or when i get back to the UK next Monday, drop it off with me and I will sort it for you..
