    Default Wireless Network Help

Ok when it comes to setting up a network

I seem to have it all working, I can connect my laptop, use the printer connected up to the desktop and see shared files

only thing wrong is when I connected it says the network is a unsecured network.

with out going too technical what do I need to do?

the network is a Linksys 54g and the laptop is an acer with built in wireless lan

    thanks

    Jon

You need to go into your router menu and find the bit that concerns security, it may also say WEP encryption or one of the other, more recent, encryption methods who's names escape me for the moment!

You can basically do three things to tighten up your network...

    1) Hide your network (Hide SSID) so that your network name doesn't appear when other people are searching for wireless networks - you'd just type in your network name if you were adding another computer.

    2) Turn on whichever encryption method you have, the stronger the better. You'll then need to type this password (that you've chosen) into the laptop when you come to reconnect it.

    3) MAC address access. On the bottom (usually) of your laptop you'll see a sticker with a MAC address. You can type the MAC addresse into the option in the router so that it will only allow those MAC addresses to access the router - it's another layer of security.

Whatever you do, do as many of those as you can ASAP - especially 2 and 3. Your network is unsecured, so whatever you can see on your PC - so can anybody else that logs onto your network (depending on your firewall settings).

    log into your router,

    Go to the Wireless section

    Click on Security

    Wep 128

Write down the code it gives you, or make up a 26 digit code

    Apply the settings

Now you will get disconnected from your network!!!!

    But

    Search for the network again

And it should prompt you for a Network Key

Enter it in EXACTLY as you made it up (or it gave you)

You should be back up and running.

    Any Questions PM me

    Guys

Hiding your network key and using 128 bit encryption is pretty pointless. I have an application on my laptop which can crack these in about 10 minutes. Mac address is the way forward!

Yeah .... WEP aint that good ... Its def. better than nothing, but use WPA if the router and laptop can support it !!
Check updates for them, if its not supported as is.

done the MAC bit too, could not find it on the laptop but the set up had a search system which showed me the mac address of all computers connected via the wireless
