Need a new steering rack :(

To pass my MOT, I need ABS diagnostics / Front brake pads and worst of all.. a new steering rack!

How much do you guys think I will be looking at for all this? £600?

I wish I had mechanic friends

Can anyone recommend garages around North Hampshire for this?

Hi am new to all this, but when you say you need a new rack what is the problem with your rack,is it leaking or as it got play if its got play you can replace the tie rod arms on the rack at a cost between 15 and twenty pounds and then just getting someone to fit them for you.

Yep. The rack might just need new innner tie rods. I belive it is not too difficult to do, if you are competent with spanners.

it has leaking AND play apparently!

If there was any way to fix it, even just to get it through the MOT I definately would go for it... The new rack along with front brake pads AND abs diagnostic / repair could set me back between 400-700 quid.. so the opportunity to save would REALLY help

I'm based in north hampshire, if anybody wants to suggest somebody or themselves for the work then I'm a totally willing customer I'd even travel, provide beer and an extra set of hands if required

I'm a programmer / web developer... So I'm ambitious enough to have a go at anything, but when it involves a spanner I usually **** it up

ABS diagnostics...? Any of the testers can correct me, but isn't the ABS light a non-testable item...?

Is it leaking passenger side by any chance? This happened to the old man's 1.8ls Vaux wanted about £600 iirc. If you need a new rack m8 i can get after-market racks at trade price through the wife as she works at A to Z motor factors in Thatcham just up the road from you.

Well the light is on.. I assumed diagnostics was to find out why? Not sure myself either...

Yes it is actually! That sounds great, the only problem I have is finding somebody who can fit it...

The seal has popped out passenger side, collects in the rubber gaitor and squeezes out down the track rod arm when going lock to lock, be careful as the fluid (if leak is bad enough) can contaminate disks & pads if left too long.
