    Default Heavy steering intermitent

Hi all yes its that time again i have a problem,

at lows speedsif my wheels are in full lock it sounds like my tyres are scrubbing and when I turn quickly the steering goes really heavy, also I can hear a knocking coming from the front even on idle (not engine knocking ) Ive took it to the garages too many times to care but no one can ever give an answer.

I have lost all faith in driving it and currently walking everywhere as it really does scare me.

Im more curious than anything as this is the final straw for the vectra im looking for a new car (v70 t5 7 seater) but do i repair and sell the vec or just scrap it, shame for a 54 plate elite to get scrapped though.

    Thanks all

Seen this a couple of time with various cars, all instances it was simply low power steering fluid level, might be worth a check, often overlooked.

UPDATE; Well how peed off am I with the garrage that fitted new steering rack.... had a look round car today, i think its the sub frame both front bolt was loose i mean not even finger tight. tightend them up and knocking noise has ceased still got the heavy steering if i violently turn steering wheel so going by the failure to tighten these bolt id hazzard a guess that the power steering fluid was never topped up. im in half a mind to go back and play up **** with them but what do I gain as i dont trust them near my car at all.

My question is what other bolts should be checked on the basis of a rack replacment??

Finally who at vauxhall designed the power steering resovior and placed it out of sight. CLOWNS!!!!

Thing is ive never had a warning light come on regarding low fluid and ive not checked the level yet as i cant be bothered/ dont have time tonight to remove all the crap that needs to be removed just to check the level.

    thanks all.

How much do matches cost now days

\HI, I have had the same problem, replaced the steering rack a month ago and the steering is very heavy, power steering bottle (for what I can see) has plenty in it but that could be an oversight on my part.

Any other suggestions of another possible issue I am overseeing?

    Thanks in advance

Have you tested the alternator under load?

If the power steering is not being fed properly, it can give problems

Hi just reading about your problem the vectra c as electro/hydraulic power steering system, the unit is mounted behind the front bumper o/s on preface lift vectra c like yours. You could check electrical connections at this unit as they do become wet, dirty, and even corroded, also behind the steering wheel is the CIM integrated in the CIM is the steering angle sensor. This sensor communicates with the unit behind the front bumper switching on and off when the steering wheel is operated left and right worth checking reprogramming/calibrating if required......
