Default Car wont start but batterys not dead?

So My 05 1.8 is off road at the moment, but i tend to start it every week or so to keep it alive.

In the past couple of weeks, on a few occasions, the car will respond to the key fob opening the car, dash lights, interior light, windows etc all work, but the car wont start and has to be jumped.

There is a clicking sound when the ignition is turned.

My guess is the alternator - but is it possible for the battery to have enough power to start the electrics but not enough to start the engine?

    Ta!

Mine did this on rare occasions. It was due to a weak battery. I had the problem of the number plate light staying on sometimes and because the battery was already weak you could use the fob to open it but you would get the click when turning it over. Change the battery mate and it should be fine.

If it is just clicking its the battery, either try giving it a good charge overnight and see if it starts then, if not replace the battery.

I don't believe it.. mine has just done this today... came to start it this morning, electrics all ok.. just click click when the key was turned.. as it is an auto, I couldnt get it out of park either. First time it has ever done it in the 5 years ive had it...

So are we guessing a battery problem rather than the alternator....?

anyone any idea how much a recon alternator would be? or the price for a decent battery

After personal experience with funny electrcial problems, my first port of call would be to ALWAYS change the battery first. Mine wasn't holding a charge for more than a couple of days, and the garage said that something was causing it to drain but they'd need a few days to find it. As the cheaper option, I just replaced the battery first to eliminate that and it's been fine since.

My battery was a 70 amp one from Vauxhall for 83 squid. If you still have problems, at least then you know the battery is working fine and it's something else...

Cheapest and easiest thing first IMO...

    Basically, yes.

Id say its purely because your just starting it then turning it off, battery may be on its way out and not holding the charge, and by starting it(where load on the battery is at its highest) its not getting a chance to recharge itself fully. When you get it started put a volt meter across the battery, if your getting around 14.5 through the battery with the engine running id say your alternator is fine, if its only sitting at about 12v then it could point towards the alternator.

Thanks for all the replies, i shall update now

Multimeters broken! will pop out to get another one later, but.

Had a few other bits to do on the car whilst working out this issue, flushed out the coolant (was mostly water really) and filled up with the GM stuff, fitted a new break pad wear sensor - Noticed the plug on top of the Airbox wasnt plugged in - plugged it back in.

Started car from a jump again - now starts consistantly, now could just be conisidence so dont want to say problem fixed, will put a meter accross the battery later on and come back with what i find.
