    Default Vectra AF23 Gearbox problems

I have a 2003 Vectra with the AF23 gearbox. It started going wrong inside warranty, occassionally slipping and often selecting the wrong gears particularly after coming off the motorway. The dealer reported NFF and it slowly got worse and eventually lost drive and tripped to limp home mode after warranty had expired. Vx paid for the box but I had to pay for (a lot) of labour.

16 months later and about 12K miles, I was driving to a business meeting on the motorway on a very wet day. Pulled off the motorway it started slipping and went into limp home mode. I just about made it to the meeting but it had no drive at all and I had it towed. There were no symptoms prior to the failure.

After trying to get Vx or the dealer to cough up I dumped it in my garage and bought another car and it's sat there for over a year. It now has a lttle drive for a few minutes before the oil warms up. I tried to sell it but it's worth nothing.

    I have 2 questions:

    1. I found notes below about a problem on the insignia forum. Does anyone know how to check if this has been done?
    -----------------------------------------------
    Field Remedy: 1650

Subject: AF23/33 transmission - No driving torque because of cooling water in transmission oil

Complaint: Loss of the transmission functionality in isolated cases. The following symptoms may occur occasionally: <*1*>- failure codes P0700, P0715 or P0720 set - slight loss of cooling water - sediments in coolant expansion tank

Cause: Improper function of the sealring at the oil cooler conncetion. This can cause the penetration of a little quantity of cooling fluid into transmission oil.

Production: An improved oil cooler/radiator has been introduced in production as of VIN W0L0ZCF3541042598 (Rüsselsheim) and VIN W0L0ZCF6848035197 (Ellesmere Port).
    ----------------------------------------------

    2. How do I check the colour of the transmission oil? I can't find a dipstick anywhere. Is it easy to change the oil or would I be wasting my time?

    Question

    1) unless it was a recall issue ....field remedy will often be done only if the customer complains. . Do you have paperwork from previous trips to dealer ....might be they listed it on there if they did it.

    2) you can try draining the fluid to see what's there and replacing it = then see if problem still there. beyond that i'd be tempted to go to a gearbox specialist

    Thanks for posting.

If the fault was due to water ingress I am hoping they would have applied the field remedy before putting in the 1st replacement transmission - perhaps I'll try giving another Vx dealer a ring and see if they can advise!

Are there any instructions on this site explaining how to change the transmission oil on the AF23. The problem with using a garage is I have the transport costs to the garage before I even start.

I have vowed never to buy another auto...

I believe the issue you're referring to with that text from the Insignia forum is a well known and common problem with Vecs that have automatic gearboxes - transmission oil and water coolant mix together because the gearbox oil cooler is sharing some component or other with the radiator.

i would suggest that the Vauxhall dealer messed up by rectifying the immediate damage (the gearbox) but leaving the cause untouched, which meant that it would inevitably happen again.

Just looked in TIS, and for that field remedy (1650), there is additional text not included in your quote above, namely:

"In case of customer complaint rework vehicles as described in Customer Satisfaction Program 06-R-016, Vectra-C, Signum - Radiator and Special Policy Program 06-P-017, Vectra-C, Signum Transmission Ventilation Hose".

I suggest you contact Vauxhall HQ customer services and get a plain english explanation as to what work the above refers to and see if you paperwork shows that it was done, or whether the dealer just replaced the gearbox and nothing else.

even if there is a field remedy, Vx don't always do it fully

look at the posts about the inlet manifold and actuator to see how they try to cut corners

    yes

i'd write to Vx but this might lead to delays

    otherwise

take it to a good gearbox specialist

get it fixed and ask Vx to foot the bill

    they've tried once without success

given a field remedy exists then if they didn;t do work properly first time then i guess that makes them liable for the faulty repair not being carried out to Vx own spec.....

i'd say that makes them look stupid

perhaps an alternative strategy is to say your writing to Vx but use this to lever the garage into fixing it properly

    ho hum

they know it goes wrong but still hope we don't know

good job TIS exists outside Vx workshop

The car has been sitting in his garage for a year, I don't think delays are a problem for him. Vauxhall will never foot the bill for work they haven't authorised and was done at a non-Vx garage.

    hi

i read i that it had been fixed By Vx then died ans was in his own garage

if i misread then let me know???????

obviously if indy has had hands on it Vx are unlikely to pay unless you've got a really strong case that the Vx repair was negligent / faulty

then its a case of proof

    Lots of great advice...much appreciated

The same Vx dealer serviced the car for me, replaced the transmission the first time it failed, and told me it was u/s the 2nd time. I towed it back and put it in my garage for a year, partly because I was so p***ed I couldn't face looking at it and partly because of a total lack of interest when I tried to sell it.

I now want to get shot of it one way or another, but a search on the web led me to investigate and post here as I might have a reasonable claim if the garage did not fix the cause of the problem when the box was replaced.

It would be a lot better if manufacturers were obliged to make public diagnostic information like this. I would have almost certainly looked it up when it failed the first time and would have made sure the job was done properly before I took it away.
