It wouldn't be possible to put in a layer with such a fine tolerance, but I do agree if it was possible then 1.6mm would be ideal
Hence why 1.0mm is where the red layer would commence, as this could be anywhere between 1.2 and 0.8 mm

If a police officer saw a red layer (with the design layer at 1.6mm) there could actually still be up to 2.0mm of tread
That could open up a can of worms in a subsequent court case, as an officer should not be taking tread measurements unless the tread is CLEARLY less than 1.6mm

Dunlop advised me previously they also liked this "traffic light" system but that the public wouldn't like it...
Strangely they already do it for some of their bicycle tyres (as I use these for my road racing bike)
This optional tyre only costs an extra £3.00

If it removes the cheap dangerous tyres I,m all for it. You would not climb up/down a mountain with cheap rubber flipflops why would you drive a car at 70mph with cheap tyres?

My mate owns a garage and he keeps some of the tyres that come in to show others and quite simply some of them are horrendous. People have taken the car in for other bits and when he has shown them the tyre they simply ask "Does it need replacing?"

Tyre manufacturers can do their bit but also the average motorist needs educating as well on the dangers of tyres and that it is down to them to check them once a week.

    Sadly people do!
The unfortunate ones DIE as a consequence

One could argue the retailer is at fault for selling unsuitable goods, however it is the end user that is at fault

Cheap tyres are useful for passing a MoT (I've done it myself), but completely useless for certain types of driving

As for running up/down mountains; I buy one pair of shoes, run them in for about 2 weeks, use them for the event then dispose of them
Given the amount of tyres I go through, the same must be true for that too!
