Default Tuning box supplied by VX main dealer...should I?

I have been in local dealers few times this week for different bits and bobs and been offered chance to buy a tuning box off bloke who works there. Don't want to give too much info as don't know who may be reading this and this deal may be cash only job!!! However this is the same box that the service department offered me when I first bought my 1.9 cdti 150 and I complained that it had serious problems with power below 200rpm. At the time they said somrthing daft like £400 and he wants nowhere near that price. Not sure where the boxes are from or who makes them but if they are supplied and fitted by dealer surely they must be safe and a good buy? I am not daft enough just to plug any old thing into my car and I am trialling it on Monday. Has anyone bought a box like this from a dealers and does anyone know who manufactures them?? What questions should I be asking them on Monday?? Reading through various threads I can't make my mind up to get one or not

Would never entertain a tuning box, especially on a 1.9!!!!!!

Most on here will tell you that tuning boxes are no match for a decent remap.

Tuning boxes are unable to alter things like injection timing for the additional fuel being used and most are unable to detect rpms etc or limit torque in lower gears to prevent damage to the transmission.

I like the idea of increased power and response but realise it will be using more fuel and fooling computer to think I have better MPG. Had thought of it a few years ago and then just forgot about it until today which has come totally out of the blue. Got to keep the car for another two years and don't really want to put more strain on other components (transmission etc). The thing is I know dealers are pricey but to offer a box for £400 would it not be half decent?

I do recommend boxes myself as they are plug and play, completely reversible, can be moved to other, adjustable for power/Eco, should the worst happen and you have a bump it can be removed from car and alot cheaper than a remap.......but as diesel dog says a remap will give you alot more out of engine if you want as much as poss.

To be honest the power gains you get from a box are more than enough!

But if you want as much as you can out of engine and moneys no object remap it, I weighed up pros and cons and went for box

Have even checked with insurance and there would be no extra premiums to pay and checked with AA as I have breakdown repair cover and they are OK with it fitted. Never really considered one due to warranty, insurance etc...but all seems ok in that respect. The only thing that bothers me is there are that many boxes out there to choose from how will this one compare??? I am not a total speed freak but would just like engine to have a tad more squirt. Before the vectra I had a focus c max 2.0 tdci and the vectra has more pull top end but the focus was unbelievably responsive and that's what I like. He paid £150 quid for it (trade price) and so it must be a decent one...thing is if i go in on monday and try it I know I will be suckered in to buy it if car is much faster!!!
