Default Auto Gearbox Oil Change -Special Oil?

    Morning all,

My Auto Veccy C has been jerking a bit during some gear changes recently so I thought I had best get the gearbox oil changed etc.

I've had a price from a local garage of £45 + VAT to change it as long as it isn't special oil it needs. Does anyone know if it is standard gearbox oil in these things or something special? Also does £45 sound about right?

    Thanks,

    Jim

The AF 40 box on the cdti uses Vauxhall automatic transmission fluid (93 165 147) or its equivilant from another maker.

I'm taking the Super Vec up to Birmingham this weekend and whilst its there my missus uncle is going to fit a replacement fog light etc. Ive asked him to change the ATF as well but he said they are filled for life and he's only ever heard of 2 being changed. He works at a main dealer and usually knows his stuff. Is the 40k recommended change fact or fiction? He also said it would be atleast £150 as theres no drain hole and you need to take the sump off etc. Any opinions?

    Check this discussion:

as the box seems to be the same as ours.

Oil must must conform to AW-1 specifications.

I'm not sure about how difficult/different is to change the ATF compared to other models as this is my first automatic and I never paid much attention to this in my previous cars' workshop manuals.
I do remember that in a Citroën Xantia, though, not all the transmission fluid was changed in an "ATF change" (as it done in a manual box), but part of it (less than a half): it seems the same as the procedure described in the Saab forum.

So if you add the price of just 3 litres + estimated labour costs... 150 pounds sounds like a 2 hours job, 45 pounds like a job done in 15 min.

Regarding the periodicity of the changes, for MY2006 onwards, Opel (in Spain) says you should change your AT oil every 48000 miles/80000 km or every 6 years (engines Z28NEL, Z28NET, Z30DT, Z19DT, Z19DTH). Every 4 years or 60000 km for other engines.

^That seems about the same as vauxhall uk.
    For auto transmission: -
"Haynes" recommend changing it every 4 years or 40k miles. I'd imagine this is the same or similar to Vauxhall uk's service schedule.
I'd have to agree with that Saab poster - "let the dealer do this!". Not worth saving a few quid by going elsewhere, for peace of mind make sure this is done right.

For manual transmission, it's not part of the service schedule & you never need to change it. Best left alone unless there's a problem.
