Thought some of you may be interested in my other car which is a MK4 Astra GSi.
Quick breakdown of her past:
Early 2008 I decided to sell my Astra VXR as I never liked it and go back to a MK4 GSI. So after weeks of scouring autotrader, ebay, pistonheads etc. This one finally popped up on ebay with 1minute 37seconds to go, as she was sitting at a low price I put in a cheeky bid and was amazed when I won the auction.
She's a 2003/53 car that came with 81,000miles on the clock downside being it had been recorded as a CAT D write off mid 2007. Quick call to the seller who was a great guy to deal with and it was reveled the only damage had been a dented wing, damaged bonnet/grille & slam panel however if I came down and didnt like what I seen then he would re-imburs the fuel costs and that would be the end off it (given it was £4k cheaper than other GSi;s at the time it wasnt a great worry). So off we trotted to Cambridgeshire and sure enough the car was as described (clarified when I got the car home and had our panel beater at work inspect the car, damage had been as stated no chassis damage etc,).
Here she is as she was bought totally standard bar an Irmcher grille & HID headlight kit the seller threw in:
Once back (via a trip to LMF on the way), it was time decide which way the car would progress, as it was never bought to stay standard. So I started to scoure the internet etc. for parts. One advert I came across on ebay was a breaker selling a complete front and rear Astra VXR brake setup, thinking on this I gave them a call and a 700mile roundtrip later I returned with the complete brake setup & also a 15,000mile engine & gearbox from the same ill-fated Astra VXR:
From there I decided to fit some of the parts sitting prior to the engine swap. First up the suspension was changed for some Eibach -50/30 kit with some Bilstein dampers along with the brake setup & Milltek turbo back exhaust:
As she sat:
Next up some more parts were stock piled
Custom 1.9CDTi air intake
Whiteline front & rear anti-roll bars
Courtenay silicone hose kit
Regal alloy lower pulley
Astra 1.9CDTi gear stick and cable
and a few other bits
She was then taken down to the mates in Reading to have the engine & box swapped over & on the way back from getting that done she was dropped off at MPG whereby a Regal inlet cam & EDS P3.5 software were fitted.
Luckily enough once I had her home I had a power run done at Start Performance where it was diagnosed as having a faulty fuel pump, so this was changed for a Regal High flow item.
A few months later I also opted to fit a Dbilas intake manifold:
The cars remained relatively unchanged since its Total Vauxhall feature in late 2008, however shortly after being at Total Vauxhall at Crail the standard turbo started making some funny noise's, a quick trip into work and it was diagnosed as "aye turbo's shagged, and the oil return pipes split".
So from there it was the decision of what to do, get a new VXR turbo or look at other options. Since it would be coming to bits I decided it would be a good idea to opt for something a bit uprated. After a few conversations with Gman I decided to go for a Turbo Dynamics Stage 2 outright hybrid. Luckily they had them on special offer with around £100 off list price, however a couple of phone calls to them later I managed to get this reduced a good bit further.
A couple of days after ordering I also decided that since I was going to this much bother I may as well just get the other bits and pieces I had been looking at doing and doing it once rather than several times, so a quick call to Regal and a Dbilas exhaust manifold was ordered. I also planned to fit my Evom diverter valve which Ive had sitting for 18months, however sods law being what it is I couldnt find it, so a quick call to Courtenay and a nice new Forge valve with uprated spring was ordered along with some new NGK Iridium spark plugs.
So old turbo off:
New turbo on:
Just little tight for space:
So now the car stands with the current spec:
