    Default Car ins rant

after being with my insurer for the last 12 mths without a claim they kindly decided to up my premium by 30% , so to cut a long story short I've gone elsewhere.
Alot of you will have had your renewal notices which states , If your a lazy git and can't be bothered shopping around for a lower quote - and you won't miss an extra £300 per annum - Then you've chosen the right insurance company! Just sit back and relax , don't even pick up that phone , just bend over and take it.
Maybe not exactly worded the same - but not far from the truth .
Anyway they have decided to carry on taking the direct debit , I'm absolutely fuming , even though I've rang them twice and asked for a better quote than the joke they sent in the renewal pack , otherwise I'll be shopping elsewhere.
Anyway they are now saying it will take upto 10 days to reimburse the direct debit as it's not there mistake.
My argument is that the insurance is a 12 month contract , not a rolling one and it's so frustrating , it's going to leave me short for other bills now .
Like I just said to the lady on the phone , what if I was working away , or on holiday ?
They just don't want to pay the charges to transfer the money back as quickly as they took it , it just really gets me when I think I paid this shower £1100 last year without making a claim .

I never rely on the companies to stop taking D/D ...I always get it stopped at the bank.
Saves all the hassle youve had

Worth speaking to your bank and checking the DD scheme T&Cs - companies are legally bound to bide by them and have to refund any charges incurred due to their mistakes. You'll need to prove that you'd cancelled the policy and that they weren't entitled to take any more money...

Always worth cancelling the DD yourself via net/phone banking or going into branch and getting them to do it for you.

mate once a d/d is taken the company needs to wait 10 days after the date to then reinstate the money taken but can take longer unfortunetly.

Thanks for the replies guys , they sorted within 48 hours surprisingly !
Tim - unfortunately I overlooked you lot , but the problem I have is the mrs is provisional , and our car is a v5 golf ( she was on last year by the way , before anyone says that's why it's hiked up so much )
The best price I could find was a few quid more than we paid last year , and I searched high and low.
£1100 ish fully comp protected ncb
it would of been half that for me on my own lol .
