    Default Z19DTH cambelt setting warning

    A quick story:-
    Bought my 150bhp Vectra at auction and found it had no power. most of the reason for that was a blocked DPF - see another thread.
    Whilst waiting for air con parts (another story) I thought I would service it.
    It has a full service history but no mention of ca mbelt change. Rang the Vauxhall dealer who did all the services. Replied they had never been requested to change the belt. It appears that the belt was changed but by a cheaper garage:-

    Took it apart and found that there were red paint marks on the crank pulley and the camshaft.
    As there are no timing marks on the casing for the camshaft this is a by 'eye' method of retaining the current setting. As a whole tooth out is quite a noticeable and big mistake I was tempted to use the paint dabs again as the kit of special tools is £46. But bit the bullet and ordered the kit. Came to fit it today and found that the previous belt was one or maybe even two teeth out as can be seen by the gap in the arrows - the hole should go over the arrowed stud.

    It's quite a strain to get the cam belt right as it has to be very tight between the cam and crank. Without the locking tools I can imagine I would be a tooth out as well.

    So the moral is use the locking tools!

    I will add to this post if the power goes up!
