    Default Code Reader Problems

    Hi all,

I purchaced a code reader and had to use it yesterday for the third time.

    http://www.talktomycar.co.uk/product...iScanMS309.htm

The first was on a mates Navara, which it displayed the code, not the definition as stated on the website, I put it down to it maybe being an odd code. I then used it on my Signum some time later when the car with spanner light came on, but it said no error codes. I then went to clear the error and it removed the car with spanner light. Yesterday the car went into Limp Mode and the car with spanner light came on. So I used the code reader, but again no error codes found, but when I deleted the error's the light went out.

I've emailed the guy who says that the car with spanner isn't engine management so isn't part of the spec, is this right?? It's good it clears the fault, but useless if it doesn't give me the code.

Does anyone have one of these?? My car is a Signum Design 1.9CDTI 55 plate, which is full can-bus.

    Cheers all.

The description of this scanner says that it "Retrieves generic (P0, P2, P3, and U0) and manufacturer specific (P1, P3, and U1) codes" so presumably the particular fault code you have falls outside of this range so the scanner can't read it. Presumably it can rest the code by sending a 'switch the light off' command that isn't dependant on that the light is actually for.

I think that you need a more expensive scanner (such as the Autel MaxiDiag EU702 or GL705) to read more codes but I think the best policy is to ask before buying as they can cost a fair bit.

some of the code readers will also only read HARD faults whereas the Vx electronics will put the light on for a SOFT fault and reduce power for HARD faults - the soft faults dont always show up on the generic handheld readers

Think it sounds like mines no good then.

It's good to clear the faults, but I'd like to know what the fault is.

I've contacted the guy from the website. I might see if he's willing to let me upgrade and return.

Well I've tried seeing if I can return it and paying for the next one up but no luck.

Whats the current favourite code reader?

Also does the MS509 pick up the soft car with spanner lights? Dont really want to spend more money and be no better off.

    Cheers all.

What is the difference between the 309 and 509? About to buy the 309 but if it doesn't read codes properly not sure I want it.

It is a shame that there is no "How 2" buy a Code Reader on this site, unless I cant find it.
It is also a shame that Rsocon had to find out the hard way that the MS309 is not up to the job.
Reading posts on here it appears that any software (for laptop's) thats costs less than £300/£500 is pirated.
So a code reader is the way to go.
But what we need is solid reviews of the different Code Readers.
I have no knowledge of any Code Reader.
I can find some on eBay and in Argos.

So anyone prepared to recommend one Code Reader?
Perhaps this site could offer one for sale, which could also provide funds for the site?
    Thanks
    Tony
