    Default Swirl Rod Linkage

    Hi all.....some help needed please

Found my swirl valve rod lying on top of inlet manifold
I fiddled about and managed to replace it. I know this is not a permanant fix.
I am going to attempt the DIY fix as detailed on here as I have not got £500+ to have inlet manifold replaced at the moment!!
I have question.....when the swirl rod linkage is correctly located, should I be able to see any movement in it while the car is stationary?? ie, I got my mate to give it some revs and I looked at the rod/swirl holes???

Secondly, on re-locating the rod, I took the car for a run, got the lovely spanner light and upon reading the code I got P1106-62. Is this because the actuator has felt resistance, possibly due to a build up of crap in the swirl pots???

It may just have been "all in my head" but the car seemed to pull a bit smoother in the lower gears during this test run, despite the spanner light being lit, and also I think there was power over a greater rev range (1800-4500).

Please folks, any advice will be appreciated as I'm at my wits end.

it will move when revved,i belive if you rev to 3k you should see it move, 3rd pot will show movement without the rod on, and all with rod on
with me i put the rod on and it didnt move, i went for a drive and got limp home mode as i beleive the 3rd valve was showing a problem as it was restricted, i put this down to the valves being shot and full of gunk, if your valves have play i.e. left, right,up,down and coming up higher than the seating i think that will cause to much resistance for it to work properly as the will be losse and jingling around everywhere, or maybe the 4 valves are not in the correct position for it to turn properly, i.e 3 are placed right and one is not
best bet is when you can afford it,replace it im afraid

cheers bunsen for the reply, i did rev it but not sure it hit the 3k mark, as i say, i had only placed the rod back on and not actually done the diy tap washer type repair. There is a fair bit of play in them and i know, ultimately, the manifold must be changed. I am gong to try my luck with the local vaux dealer, as some other members have, even though the cars covered 85k. You never know....even if they offered to pay half I'd be quite happy. In my favour, it does have a full main dealer service history so i'll let u all know the outcome!!

Yeah, just been there now, just asked nicely if there was any chance of maybe meeting me half way on the costs. They say that in order for me to lodge any claim of this nature, THEY must first diagnose the fault. I told them it was not that tricky as the swirl valve linkage was lying face down on top of the manifold, clearly detatched from its correct position. They want me to pay the diagnostic fee (£90.00) before they'll look into paying anything towards it.

Oh and I also mentioned it was a well documented design fault, they said it is not a design fault as no updated/improved manifold has ever been produced.
I'm sure I have read somewhere that the design was changed somewhere around 2006/7.

Anyway, the linkage is now in my kitchen undergoing the DIY "screw-cap" repair, see how it goes!!!!!!!!!
