Cut down on the beer and takeaways is rule 1.
You have to be careful about rapid weight loss, as you can put it back on and then some far to easily (and quickly).
The best way is to put yourself on a sensible diet, try to avoid high carb food like pasta unless you are really burning the calories off.
In the gym build up slowly, doesn't mean take it easy but don't go mental either. Ask the gym staff if they offer a personal trainer service or have the number of someone who does, ok it will probably cost extra but they will help you set goals and help you to get there.

I tend to prefer the crosstrainer and treadmill, though at the moment I've get dodgy shins so have to take it easy on the treadmill. Spending more time in the pool at the moment.

I use the takeaway as a treat a couple of times a month and have a good blow out. Full blown chinese or indians.

If you're near any bonny and rolling bits of countryside, then cross-country running on bridlepaths/public rights of way can be a good way to pound out some miles and adds a bit of interest. It's knackering too, but going steady away and trying to improve a small amount each time will soon see your stamina improving..

You need to do some weights along with the cardio. Do weights and keep in the 12 rep range that will help keep you toned and then hit the cardio. But as I say to people diet is 80% of it. Get that right the weight will fall off

I have lost about a stone in the last 6 months. Its not that good but i bearly changed my diet. Takeaways are still there! Exercise is the key. The more you exercise the faster your metabolisium so you burn calories faster even when your doing nothing!

im in the same boat, i realised on holiday how hard I found it to swim like i used to. I built up my swimming on hol and joined the gym on return. I have to say im loving it, go about 5 times a week. Im using the bike and set myself a target in calories of 200, then the treadmill walking uphill also 200 cals at first. If im feeling up to it I then row 2 kmts which is just over 100 cals. I then swim - the pool is 25 mtrs - I started off doing lengths in multiples of 6, usually managed 18 lengths. I now do multiples of 10 and aim for 30. Ive been going 2 months now and yesterday i did 220 cals on the bike, 320 on the treadmill, 105 on the rowing machine then swam 25 lengths. Ive stopped eating crisps for a snack and switched to apples and bananas - ive only lost about half a stone but im much fitter and stronger, stomach is starting to shrink and man boobs are less saggy (uugghhh).

I'm no authority but the saying "you are what you eat" is very true in this instance. People that do some exercise then say "oh I can have that curry and 6 pints cos I've been good this week" is rubbish as your body will be craving more due to the exercise so it'll take MORE of the crud you feed it.

I like to think of it like this - your car does 0-60 in 8 seconds (for instance) because you run it on petrol. Run it on burger fat and beer and it won't even start. Same goes for fuelling your body.

Don't go mad - just cut the takeaways and minimise the beers (no need to kill the beers completely...lol). My mate actually moved from beer to whiskey and water for a long time as part of a healthy eating and exercise move, he managed to lose 5 stone in 18months! Every little helps...
