    Default dpf and soot???

i thought the dpf was supposed to remove soot i have no fault codes stored but my exhaust is black with soot there is no visible smoking on normal running and motorway cruising but if i drive around for a while then drop a gear and give it some beans a black cloud kicks out noticable in my mirrors i know this is normal on a diesel but i thought the dpf was to prevent this

it still carries out regens as normal very 600miles or so

and now warning lighs or no running probs

hope you guys can shed some light on this

Is the car running ok? If so this may be causing excess soot levels in exhaust emissions.

That's strange Winnie. Mine was soot free before removing the DPF, and now chuffs a healthy amount of soot. Not loads, but just enough to see that it's a diesel heading for the horizon.

Hmm strange I have seen your pic and mine is like the black of te night with loads of soot I can even write inside my tail pipe

Car is running perfect pulls like a train and idle is spot on

no stored fault codes or anything to worry about
everything is working had new egr and inlet manifold fitted too

So why is there soot cumming from the dpf then?

Like I said can't see any soot when driving but when I drop a gear and blast up past 3600rpm There is a noticable cloud it does not stream out just a big puff when dropping a gear to overtake once the puff is out then it's clear all the way to 5200rpm and will e clear untill boot it again after a few miles

So is the dpf starting to fail or is it not working as good as it should it does regens with nonexcessive smoke

I know I have a caterman box fitted but I regulary give it blasts and the exhaust pipe was black before I fitted the box soni doubt it's the cause

Any more ideas or do I leave it untill it blocks up then I hve a excise to get the dpf removed and software took out

i would say perhaps the dpf is getting saturated through time and some soot is making it to the back box, which will puff out when booted. Is your car a high miler? mine has 104k, the dpf is 78% saturated atm and the tailpipe is also sooty.
I guess when the car was new, the dpf could catch all soot, but as is saturates, its bound to let some through as the honeycombe cant catch it efficiently as it once did.
if mine makes it to 110k before requiring a new dpf, then i dont suppose its done too badly and i will probably replace it with a new one, ready for the next 100k,,,,,,coughs,,,.

Car has 74000 on it I won't worry too much I take it if it too blocked at what % saturation does it throw up a fault code to say it's blocked and needs replacing any mire ideas what to do it just leave it till it blocks co

syptoms are, car wont rev well, if it will run at all, limp mode and code 1901, dpf differential pressure variance.

i read somewhere fault code comes in at 90% blocked, so for now just drive her, let it complete regens when they start, no matter how inconvenient, and the dpf should go on working for many miles yet.

maybe someone close has a code reader, it can tell you the current % of saturation,

I had that last week .....cleaned the EGR and after 70 odd miles driving, it appeared to be running great again (all relative of course ) .The next morning though after 2/3 mins I got the spanner light and went into limp mode. Did this all this week until I recleaned (this time following the how 2) the EGR and then the boost sensor. Also fitted some home made "fiat gaskets" on the EGR. But I still went into limp mode. Took to mechanic next day and he read an EGR error and P1901. Cleared errors and went for a drive. Same thing...limp mode ..but this time only P1901. Had to get to work so I drove 40 odd motorway miles and near the end of the journey the spanner light went out and the car went out of limp mode
Did my car do a regen without me noticing do you think? (even when I was in limp mode...60/80mph @2200rpm average at a guess in 6th)

It's been running like a charm ever since (fingers crossed I know). I mean so much smoother up through 2000rpm and free'er rev'ing up to WOT. Previous to this (if I restarted the car to clear the limp mode for a few minutes) I did notice the engine dragging (treading water so to speak) as it moved from 3500prms up to WOT but not now so something must have happened to bring about this change??

    History 04 150 cdti estate
120K miles and the swirl bar has been off for nearly 70K. One other thing ...I can never remember seeing this DPF regen notification on my dash and I do plenty of motorway miles..some fairly sharpish...Is there a chance I just haven't noticed it or are there some cars that aren't regening automatically (i.e. need a software update)? My car hasn't seen a vx garage since I left the forecourt..and I'm all the better for it IMO
