    Default Please Help New Fault

    Hi

11 months, 11k miles back my alternator was replaced as the red warning light had come up on the dash.

It appeared again today on a drive to work and when in stop start traffic.

On the clear run home tonight, when I pulled up outside my house, the car was stuck on a fast idle, the engine was wobbling unevenly, at around 1100 revs and would not drop to the standard idle speed below 1k revs.

The car is going back to the garage regarding the red battery warning light as they guarantee their work for 12 months. BUT why is the idle now fast and stressed and uneven in the idle at 1100 revs? Please please give some ideas.

Thats a sign of the battery voltage dropping below 12volts, the vehicle keeps the rpm up to try and regain a 12v+ charge, I take it it wasnt a genuine alternator used... and its a 1.9????

Having read the posts about alternator recalls and that Vx did improve the alternators on the Vectra at some point, when the battery warning light came on again I am concerned a substandard alternator was put on the car.

The AA came out and the whole battery charge left the battery. As said, with the over idling to keep it above 12v, the alternator has failed and is not charging the battery.

Was an AA approved garage national chain used to fit the alternator through the AA Breakdown Repair cover scheme where I paid the first £25 back in October 2009 and 10k miles ago.

It is under 12 mths warranty and should be sorted for me tomorrow.

hmmm. update. after me chasing the garage, the cautious glum response on the phone was that it is not an alternator problem, it is a wiring problem. anyone ever heard of this?
