    Default PC Monitor Problems

On the scrounge for some PC advice.

I have an HP Pavilion LCD monitor which has developed a really annoying habit of switching itself off every now and again and it wont start again until it's ready to.

Nothing looks unusual when it goes off - the light on the AC adapter thing remains on so I presume it's okay but only guessing.

Can these things overheat and switch off until they cool down?

    Anyone any ideas?

    Cheers

Does the monitor have a dual colour led which is green when the pc is on and amber when the pc is off? What does the led do when the monitor is not displaying anything?

silly question, but its not just going into standby is it? If so, just disable standby in the power management options.

Yeah it has this dual colour led. Blue when on and amber when I switch the PC off. I can press the button at this point and the amber light goes out.

When it switches itself off there is no light.

Sounds more like you pc been the problem than the monitor mate. If the monitor is amber it would sugest it is not getting a signal from the PC. As per elites post are you sure it is not going into power saving mode....the pc that is?

I know very little about computers and how they work. Would it go into power saving mode whilst being used as it switches off when being used?

the pc wouldnt go into standy whilst being used, it would only go into standby when its not. you can always try updating your graphics card driver. these updates can normally be found from the manufacturer of the graphics card, ie. nvidia, ati etc...
    See if that works.

Good advice Elite but I think the most likely cause is a failing graphics card. Proabably due to the recent heat.

When it switches off I usually wait 5 minutes or so to see if it does anything but it doesn't so I shut the PC down and restart until it works again. So I'm afraid I can't tell if it has retained the last display.

I don't think my PC has a separate graphics card. I think it's built into the CPU but I may be talking cr*p.
