The computer has started telling me to "check safeguard" (the alarm) and displays the little man running away from the noise sign. My question is, what exactly can you check on it?

Sounds like something on the ultrasonics which monitor the interior.....
See if you can disable the interior ultrasonics using the dash button, it may be a fault with that...
i sat in the car and locked it and the alarm came on fine. but i jiggled abit and waved my arms around expecting the alarm to sound but it didn't. So it could be something to do with the sensors i guess.

Seriously though, I had the check safeguard after i fitted the sunglasses holder / map light, the plug wasn`t in correctly, have you done any work on the car which could have hit a plug ?
nope, not touched anything, and i had just driven it minutes earlier and jumped back in and drove off and it came up. I'll try fiddling with plug first i guess then.
I pulled down the panel with the sensors in today and all seems fine. everything seems to work ok. If i open the door with the key in the lock the alarm sounds when the door is opened. The LED flashes as per norm so that works ok. Looks like a trip to the stealers (again). It says something in the hand book about the alarms features mean that problems can be easily solved. (yeh right) i'll believe it when i see it.
yay!!! Fixed it. Managed to take it all apart and put it back together which sorted it! no expensive grubby technician in sight! No offence to any grubby technicians on here! Has anyone else noticed you cant see the alarm led from the drivers window? Another good idea!! (not)
