mountain bike

brought a mountain bike today from my uncle, it has them quick release wheels i tried to connect my sons bike ttrailer to the bike but i've done it that tight i now need to get a new quick release bar from halfords tomorrow because ive threaded the bar, how do these quick release thing work, when i turn the nut the outer part of the nut the inerside turns aswell but when i get so far the outer part sprins so it cant be turned anymore is that when you know its tight enough? these quick release things dont seem safe to me tbh

I tighten the nut side by hand until the lever end bites when its paralell with the axle, then I close it towards the forks or frame. Any more than that and you'll probably snap something. If you cant close it easily, then loosen the nut a few turns until you can close the lever.

You'll probably find a new QR for around £10.

You tighten the nuts with the lever in the locked position until it won't turn anymore by hand, then you unlock the lever, turn the nut 1-2 whole turns and lock it again. Should be "finger tight".... Sorted

The levers should be on the same side of the bike as eachother, the front should be pointing up in line with the forks to prevent it being opened accidentally, the rear should be inside the A frame section (formed by the the seat stay and the chain stay).
