    Default arn't our police wonderfull

Live on a private unadopted road. Last night someone adandoned a clapped out s reg fiesta. Still there this afternoon so I looked round it wondering if it had been stolen. Doors locked didn't seem to be any sign of it being hot wired, looked at the back and found a lovely pool of petrol. Fuel was literally running out of the tank. No-one knew who it belongs to so I rang plod. The response I got was sorry sir as the vehicle is not reported stolen and is not on a public highway there is nothing we can do. What about the fuel all over the road I said? If some yob throws his fag end it then there will be a mega fire. Sorry sir then it will be a job for the fire brigade! Am I missing something?

The coalition govt has told them they don't have to meet any targets any more, so you'll see a lot more plod ambivalence from now on.

As the road is unadopted the local authority may also refuse

I would suggest contacting the appropriate land management agent, they can then take action
Sadly those residents will end up paying for it

However if the petrol is leaking then you could refer the matter to environment-agency.gov.uk
It would be classed as an "above ground tank leak" and immediate action is required by the owner

Alternatively, drag the car into the public road!
Seen that done when people leave cars on petrol stations *cough
Dragged to the exit, then phoned the police
An hour later the car is gone
The exit has to be kept clear as an emergency route for the tanker

If it's on an unadopted road then they're right. The car will need insurance but can get away with road tax as the roads not repairable at public expense. It's a tricky one.
