Default Thinking of buying a Signum

Hello everyone. Please can i have some sound advice. I am looking at buying a Vauxhall Signum 1.9CDTI Elite 2005. I have been to have a look at it and while the outside loooks like in fairly good condition i just have a few niggly thoughts.
1, 135,000 with patchy service history
2, In the boot something has scraped the pillas near the side window.
3, The steering wheel is off center id say about 10 to 12.
3, The key looks like it has been chewed up by a dog
I just have a gut feeling this car has not been looked after or am i being trivial?

The 1.9 can be troublesome, so combine that with the high mileage and the patchy service history, and you could be looking at a money pit. In addition, a patchy service history can be an indication that the car's been clocked - for example, if the car has done 190,000 miles and has had 55,000 miles removed from the clock, the dodgy seller has to throw away any garage invoices that show a mileage higher than 135k.

Jezzy, dam that was a quick reply. I see where you're coming from. It use to be concidered a diesel was on just breaking in at 100k does this still ring true or only with certain engines?

indeed most modern cars are still only breaking in at 80k but with little or scarce service history as on ANY car you have o ask has it been serviced at all ?? tie that in with the lack of respect on maintanance of the interior ..i would walk away...there are plenty of decent motors out there that have been looked after and would not be too much more money

Cant understand how the steering wheel is off centre as there is only one correct way to put them on if it has been off i can only think that the steering rack has been replaced or something along those lines
135k i think you are bound to run into money costing problems

The 1.9 can give trouble way before 100k. Plenty of people will defend it - and when it works it's an excellent engine...rapid, economical, tuneable, but there are certain bits of it that are prone to failure, such as the EGR valves and if you buy the 150 BHP version then the swirl valves also often fail (about £700-900 to fix).

Hey Signumboy, thanks for your reply. The steering wheel definately angles towards N/W and there is no paperwork with regards any repairs.

Jezzy This is a 150BHP model

steering wheel out of alignment would suggest geometry parts replaced (arms or track rods etc ) and hasnt been realigned - front wheel alignment will resolve this issue easily they just didnt make sure the steering wheel was straight whe they did the initial repair

It used to be the case yes, trouble is your modern diesel has such alot added too it to provide performance, reduce noise, and limit emissions that they do seem rather fragile compared to the 60 to 70 bhp motors off 25 years ago. Thats the trade off for double to triple the power per litre in 3 decades.
