Default CDTi SRi fuel gauge problem

I’ve just bought a 2005 (facelift) Vectra CDTi SRi 150 estate which has an intermittent fault with the fuel gauge. It will ready empty when there is plenty of fuel in the tank, when this happens the fuel warning light does not come on and the Rang on the trip computer reads ‘F’. The trip computer still shows all other functions.

Any suggestions would be a big help. Does anyone know where the fuel sender is located and how to access?

    Cheers Ade

On the hatchback they are under the back seat, don't know on the estate though.

It seems that it will only give a reading when the tank has just been filled, even then it looks like it's inaccurate.

Has anyone changed one of these are they easy enough?

They are different part numbers (13178569) for the hatchback and estate so I'm guessing it might be different access.

DV8 did this solve the problem? I’m thinking about changing the sender myself or if the access is easy enough giving it a clean and checking the connections. Apart from this its a great car.

Ade, no mate, even now after having electrics, softare, new sender unit, connections etc.. all check by VX (thats what they say) they cant find anything wrong, if you park on a slight gradient or even a steep hill, or basically when it wants too, the guage shows 3/4 full, next visit back to the car it shows 1/3 (although this happens on anything over 1/3 of a tank, not less!) the displays re-calulates the mileage to reflect the change in fuel level which is what i find strange.
Then when you fill up say 20L-20L when its low it then shows nearly a full tank. It just cant be trusted, then again.... when the tank is full to the brim, the range display shows 385 miles everytime! then as you do the milage it goes up!

With the faults noted on here and the issues i have over the past few months, i will be honest i doubt ill return to VX just too many issues and i have another fault with a grinding through the steering, local garages say they can hear and feel it, but VX say nothing wrong, driven a similar car albeit a year older, no issue at all... dont know who to go to or ask, unless i get a local grage to relace the hub, even though its under warranty with only a 2 months to go, feel im being fobbed off till then.

good luck... might work, worth giving a try, if only for piece of mind.

Mine only seems to register any reading when the tank is full or almost full and then it’s intermittent and will vary a lot.

From what I can work out it seems as if there’s a loose connection or the sender unit is faulty and not supplying and accurate or any reading. Once I’ve had a chance to look at the location of the sender I’ll decide what I’m going to do. If it’s easy to get to I’ll try and clean the sender and the connections but if it’s a pain to get to then I may as well replace the sender while I’m at it.

It’s an annoying fault which means I have to keep filling the car up more regularly than I’d like and don’t get to take advantage of the long range.
