Thumbs up The Ye Olde Chestnut of TID to GID?

    Dear All

Paul B here. I've just joined the forums with my net Q supplied 07 Vectra Life 1.9 CDTI with 33 thousand on the clock, 150 automatic. Lovelly motor car, but at present I don't believe I'm getting book mileage out of her.

I was wondering - I have the TID display in my centre console, yet do also have the roller switches on the steering wheel for the BC (Which unsurprisingly reads "No Function").

    Can anybody tell me:

If I decide to retrofit the TID for a GID (So I can have the fuel consumption monitor), is all the functionality already there in the car and it's just a case of uplifting the display and Tech2-ing? or is it that the car itself needs a whole raft of additional sensors fitting to get this?

The car is still under warranty and I don't mind getting it done at a main dealer for the sakes of keeping it all legit.

    Any advice much appreciated.

    Kind regards

    PG Beckett

Hi mate i did mine not too long ago. Mine was slightly different as my car is only 1/2 canbus (buttons on the wheel) where yours if full. (rollers on the wheel). I think you'll need a screen that has been divorced from the original head unit and maybe even a new wiper stalk with the BC control buttons on it. The only thing that needed tech2-ing on mine was the stalk.
I think the dealers will tell you 'it's not possible' Thats what they seem to tell most people on here, but by all means ask them then go and show them ;-)

BC on facelift is controlled via the "scrollers" but you will need a GID, to be paird to your car.

    Mostly there guys.

Right then, what you will need to do is: -
    1) Check the 32 pin screen connector for which wires it has fitted.
Some cars with TID screens, have only 1 red and 1 brown wire in the screen loom.
For a GID, you will need 2 reds and 2 browns.
To achieve this, you will need to link pin 1 to pin 2, and then link pin 3 to pin 5.

    2) Obtain a GID from a full can vehicle - the most common has an Alpha Code DD, although BJ and BK should also fit.
As said above, ensure that it is in delivery mode / divorced / upaired state.

    3) Connect it all up, and then get it Tech 2 programmed to your car.
You will have to ensure that the technician goes through ALL the procedures for programming the screen, along with the code index and the variance coding.
The correct code index will enable Board Computer and check control functions.

If you enable check control functions, then you would need to add the wiring and the sensor for the washer fluid bottle. Or simply short pin 14 of the Under hood electrical centre to earth (See the How 2 for this).

Many thanks for this - so the general opinion is that it can be done.

Anybody know how much a brand new GID might cost me?

I would suggest between £600 and £800 for a brand new one, but I bought my last one for £21 from e-bay.

Feel free to query screen codes, as I have a list on my lap-top.
What I would suggest though, is that if you do buy from e-bay, then do ensure that it is in delivery mode.

Fit the screen, and then get someone to Tech 2 program it to your car.
Again dealers are quite expensive and not necessarily the most conversant with the full programming procedure...it s quite involved for a full divorced screen to be properly installed.

Many thanks for the replies ! Very informative indeed!

For the actual generation of the MPG figure and other things, anybody know where this comes from?

I mean is the functionality part of the radio system or is it piped in from elsewhere like the engine management unit and displayed on screen?

I.e. I only have the basic CD30, so can I still get the MPG figure by retrofitting the GID screen?

    Kind regards

    Paul
