    confused Spanner & Car Light

    Hi,
The spanner and car light comes on every morning when I start my car from cold, but then once the engines warmed up a bit and been restarted, I wont see it again until the following morning when it's been stood for ages!
Has anyone any ideas to save me booking it into the stealers to diagnose the fault?
The car is a 54 plate 120 CDTI Vectra with 125K on the clock.
    Cheers,
    Smithy

Usual culprit is the glowplugs for what you're describing. Ultimately though a code readout will save guessing and getting it wrong. Have you tried the pedal trick to see if it will show any codes?

Think mines doing the same. I have a 120 CDTi 05, the spanner comes on and goes off after 3 minutes. If i leave it for an hour or so and start again the light doesnt come on. If left all day at work it will come on and then go off again after 3 mnutes. Cant get my code reader to give any fault codes either. The pedal trick didnt work also

99% sure its the glow plug!!

I have had mine on the reader tonight with the same fault, can't remember the code now. I would not worry one little bit about it, but none-the-less, try and have the fault "read" just to be sure. From experience, i would not worry about the car/spanner light UNLESS the car goes in to limp mode!!!

My " diagnostic device" said ............."general glow plug error".

End of the day, theres 4 of them and they're only used during the ignition cycle so if one is dodgy and the car starts ok then don't worry. Worst possible case you have to replace all four at a cost of about £50!!!

Small change compared to what could go wrong with these engines!!!

Just bought some glow plugs, when i get them and fit them I will let you know how i get on. If your getting smoke on startup also, I have been told it is more likely to be glow plugs. Will keep you all posted, full set of NGK off ebay £37.30 delivered!
