Default turbo change.... on cdti 120

as from my other thread regarding a noise which i thought was my aux belt tensioner, i stripped my car today and found out it was my turbo that was squeeling...!

so i took the old turbo off the car bit of a challenge but got there in the end and found some play in the shaft, think that must be the cause of the noise, so i called my local breakers to price a turbo with no luck but the guy on other end of the phone said his mate had a turbo, so gave him my number and went to collect the turbo and also managed to get an egr valve and a throttle body all for the price of £100 thought that was pretty reasonable??

so replaced the turbo with the one i collected and it seems to be running fine, only thing i noticed is the turbo i got seems to whistle alot more than my old one is that a problem or is it normal?

also is it possible to have my old turbo refurbed or refurb it myself? any idea of a cost?

    added some pics

    my old turbo

    new turbo

    the two together

and the egr and throttle body

    cheers for looking

how long did it take to remove the old one? i guess the bumper has to come has to come off. If you have time, maybe take some pics of the reassembly and make a how too.

meant to say it only took over an hour to get the old turbo and manifold off the car that included a rounded off stud bolt on on the under side of the manifold,

hi mate, im going to have a go at changing my turbo next week because it whisltles its head off. Ive been told they whislt when they have had the wrong oil put in. How true that is i dont know but i dont think a whislting turbo is a good turbo. lol. Mine has just started smoking when accelerating

I had a price to refurb mine if i get the turbo off, £200. dont know if thats any good.
How long overall from start to finish did it take to do the whole job. i changed a turbo on my old mondeo tdci and that took 7 hrs approx

hi chap, started to strip the turbo off around 1pm took about 1-2 hours to get it off cos i had a rounded stud then i had to do some phoning around to find a new turbo, went and collected it and started the refit after i got home, it took a wee bit less time to refit but the oil feed pipe which goes into the block is a real pig to get off (no space for my shovel hands) if you remove the cat and drop the downpipe and flexi itll be alot easier to get access, make sure you have coolant for refitting cos i had to drain the system as you need to take the hoses off that go over the top of the manifold,

prob took about 3-4 hours in total without all the messing about,

you say yours is whistling? my new turbo is a bit like that but i think i have a leak somewhere so going to invetigate tonight,

where are you getting your turbo refurbished mate? thinking about getting my old one done so i can put it back on and sell the other on ebay cos they fetch a good price

let me know if you wanna kno anything else

    cheers john
