Default Exhaust gas smell from fan

New to the site as have just got a hold of a 2005 Design 150 CDTi estate. Car is brill and pulls like a train but have a few bits I need help with.
1 - When the fan is turned on (with a/c on or off) there is a whiff of exhaust fumes which is concerning. When the recirculate button is pressed, it clears. Just wondered if it could be something major or can I attack it myself?
Also, when opening the drivers door past the first stop, there is a loud 'crack' and the same on the way back - again major or not in your opinion?
All help gratefully appreciated and love the site.
    Chris

welcome Chris, i have the 120 version of your car and had similar exhaust type smell in the car when fan operated. First, check the weatherstip on the bulkhead where the bonnet shuts too,it runs from side to side of the car. If its not seated right, worn or has gaps, air is drawn into the cabin from the engine bay. Mine did this mainly when stationary, but when moving it was ok. Check all breather hoses are tight, particularly round the back of the engine and all gaskets round the egr valve are sound and not leaking. i read sometime on here that it can be diesel fumes from the fuelfilter if its not tight enough. I guess best thing is pull off the top cover and visually inspect for tell tale staining or leaks. the cracking on the door will probably be the checklink, try greasing it and if that fails, just replace it, simply bolts in.

    Barney,

Was this like a normal oily engine smell or do you reckon it was proper exhaust fumes?

I would be seriously worried if exhaust fumes were getting into the cabin

hey exclusive, in my case it was exhaust fumes, the joint on the egr cooler was leaking exhaust gas into the engine bay, so when moving, airflow cleared it, but stationary it filled the engine bay and after tightening cured that issue, then i found the engine breather pipe clamp slack, where it connects to the back of the block, so oil fumes were being sucked in by the fan. The pollen filter caught alot of this and was black. Also, the weartherstrip i mentioned wasnt seated right, so air was being drawn from engine bay. All sorted now and just the usual few mins smelly air from aircon, still there even after using air con bomb.

I got same problem on my Vectra 1,9cdti 2005.

However @ same time I got increased fuel consumption (3,4-5ltr/h)!!! And this is not mention by no one.... After power off/on its going back to normal stend by consumption (0,7-1,4ltr/h) and no smell of fumes inside the car!!!
    NO power loss noticed.

So I wonder what is my case is it a gasket of EGR/exhoust manifold crack or a intake manifold problem with the swirl?

The fumes might also be hot diesel leaking from the leak-off pipes onto the hot engine block.
The leak-off pipes take excess diesel from the injectors back to the diesel pump.
They do perish, and the fumes will make you feel very sleepy. Plus increase the fuel consumption.
    Needs checking ASAP.

Thanks for reply. Previously ithought that the fumes coming from the DPF regeneration (As the fuel consumption go down if power off/on the engine?!) but i found they not (as the glow light not blinking).

The ONLY leak I notice is on the connection of rubber pipe just behind the boost sensor/where the screwdriver showing. Sorry but im onboard now and my access is restricted by Baracuda web filter so I link to existing picture.
I got this minor leak since i got the car 2 year ago, and the smell start coming about 3 months ago...

What else i notice is that when this happen an air is blowing on the forward of the engine between engine and cooler (next to the engine oil level stick). Maby it is from the cooling fan, but it also cease if power off/on the engine.
