Default 1.9cdti went straight into reserve fuel on motorway... any suggestions

    hi guys,
thanks to all those that have helped me so far and those who are going to help me in the future.
My 1.9cdti sri 150bhp is still having issues. The latest update is that my bro was driving it on the motorway the other day at 70mph, the fuel gauge suddenly started to display reserve light and the car went into limp home mode.
Bro managed to get it on the hard shoulder and got it towed to the garage where they filled it up with fuel and it was ok.
He swears that he filled it up with the £10 worth of diesel before he left.

    any ideas anyone?

I don't think the car goes into limp home mode just because it thinks you're short of fuel. Limp home mode comes on when the ECU spots a fault and tries to protect the engine from [further] damage.

Maybe it didnt actually run out of fuel....the reason it cut out and the reserve light came on was because of an electrcial fault?? Just a thought but as Jezzy says, lack of fuel would surely result in total loss of engine power and not just limp mode....I dont know, just a thought.

    Anyone else? Interesting one......

£10 of diesel isn't an awful lot these days, how far was he travelling? I know what fuel starvation feels like on a petrol engine, have no plans to find out on diesel but wouldn't have thought it would bring on limp home mode.

I'd agree with that. It probably started to stutter and "mis fire" thus sticking limp home mode on.
Now I need a turbo to keep up!

thanks for all teh responses guys

    sorry for the late reply,
iv found out that he was on the motorway for less than 10 miles.
maybe it did run out of fuel, it certainly explains why it started straight bac up when more fuel was put into it.

does anyone know what the vacuum reservior does?
as im going to try and replace this to see if this will fix the fault.

To be honest, no, it was a shot in the dark.

Put up a history of the probs you been having, from the start, and folks on here will be able to delve in a little deeper and see whats going on.

As a passing comment probably completely un helpful but my Vec B V6 goes into limp mode if it runs low on fuel, brings up the code for knock sensor, due to fuel starvation, could it possibly be something similar?

my cdti ran out of diesel once (and once only!), it just completely cuts out, doesnt stutter or do nothing, just comes to a complete stop... Only brought on the engine managment light when trying to restart it..
