F17 Gearbox oil Change

Changed the gearbox oil yesterday, car has done 111k in three years and the difference is marked, much more slick and less notchy shift. Used a genuine gm gasket and genuine gm oil as the lot came to £16. Why they didnt put a drain plug on these boxes is beyond me, suck bad design. To anyone who has a high miler and hasnt done it yet i'd say its a very worthwhile piece of maintenance no matter what vauxhall say.

what engine is the f17 gearbox for ??

1.8, iirc rest of the range run the stronger boxes.

Our 1.8 life on 54plate went tits up over the weekend, sound like a diff problem from what the AA man described. Its sitting outside the garage waiting its turn. Obviousley I need to buy another box, are they all F17's on the 1.8 accross the MY's or do they vary at any point? Im guessing it must be stamped on them somewhere....

They are all F17+ gearboxes but there are quite a few different types of this gearbox produced for various GM cars.

i see, and I'm guessing they are not interchangable between different gm cars?

Depends on how much work your willing to do, had a 59 astra f17 fitted to a 06 vectra c and it wasnt a direct fit, would be best to source one from a vec c or have yours rebuilt, local gearbox place charges about £350 for a exchange box as a guide but a 2nd hand box is anywhere from £50 to £200.
