Hybrids. Awful things. Exempt emissions test on MOT though

It's not a hybrid - it's a range extended electric vehicle. Hybrids use a combination of two propulsion units to drive the car, e.g. a small petrol engine providing the majority of the power, with an electric motor providing a smaller proportion of the power. The Ampera (or Chevy Volt, which the Ampera is a rebadged version of), is only ever propelled by its electric motor. You charge the batteries up overnight and this gives you a 30 mile range. Should you need to drive further than that, the petrol engine starts up, but only to act as a generator to charge the batteries whilst the car is on the move - the petrol engine never actually propels the car at all.

Looks different alright, but without financial incentives very few people will buy one at the price they are likely to charge for it. Effectively being totally dependent on battery power for it to function is a concern IMO

    Hydrogen-cell technology, anyone?

I'd have an electric car that has a 100mile range (with overnight recharge for same range) at the drop of a hat if priced right.

most people dont need more than 100miles a day range for the average commute etc so there is a market for them. Just a manufacturer needs to take that big step into the market and just make a normal car rather than some of these stupid 'futureistic bullsheets' designs

i could use it for day to day running but would need a 'normal car' for going on trips etc
then the costs of running 2 cars kick in

Insurance and maintenence only really for cars like this.... oh and some economy7 electricity. I'd imagine the actual costs of running real commuter cars would be minimal compared to running a dull dervy wagon and something fun.
