Bottle Blower...?

Strange title I know but there is a reason for it.

My Vectra 1.9TD (2004) has started producing a sound when accelerating that is best described as the sound made when someone blows across the top of a beer bottle. It isn't present at all stages of acceleration and neither can I reproduce it while revving the engine when parked. The car also tends to hesitate/lose power a little. Sometimes the Spanner light comes on too.

Any ideas please? Thanks for looking.

I haven't had chance to check your suggestions yet. However, today the noise has become very loud - more like the noise a lorry sometimes makes when it brakes. Since my original post I have also noticed that there is no noise in the morning (when it is cool/cold) and gets worse as the day goes by (when it gets hots).

I am beginning to wonder if it is the front disc brakes. If the discs were worn, would it be likely they could make this noise when hot?

i had this similar thing after changing my pads and discs on my astra, no noise when cold but when they were warmed up they started making the screech, was quite annoying but my mate didnt put any anti squeek paste on,

maybe similar. you need someone the car with you and wind down one window at time and listen to what side it may be coming from, if its the same problem

Thanks for your help folks. Turned out to be the intercooler blowing like a vuvuzela.

I relatively straight-forward job if you have all the right tools. Found it difficult to remove the two top fixing screws. All a bit tight for room.

One question ... the old intercooler has some kind of flat strengtheners top and bottom but not the new one. Are they supposed to be removed and fitted to the new one?
