Default What Oil Should I Use?

i got a warning light today, looks like i have low oil. i have to drive back to Leicester on Friday, i dont want to risk it. Im going to get the oil changed here in Boston before i go. Could anyone tell me what oil i should use on the car? its a 53 pre-facelift 1.8 SriNav DualFuel. i want to use Castrol GTX Magnatec, but ive been told by a few garages that they don't make the right oil for my car, is this right? any help much appreciated. ta.

Nonsense, as the petrol stations I operate have loads of it!
What they probably don't want to do is sell the GM-LL oil and would rather sell you their own
Castrol GTX Magnatec is now discontinued

However your car is now way out of warranty, so no need to use GM-LL oil
Any Synthetic oil between 0W30 and 10W40 is suitable

Depending on mileage I'd use 5w30 fully or if higher mileage a 10w40 semi

if 10w 40 is used then it's recomended that it's changed every 10k miles anyway

It's possible to buy fully-synth in 10w-40 (50) form, but 10w-40 sem-synth is fine if changed regularly. As someone already suggested, if your car is up on miles (particularly if it's a petrol engine), then it's a good idea to use an oil that stays a bit thicker at high temps. This may help stop the oil disappearing down the sides of of valve guides and pistons.

right lads, great deal at Halfords on oil. i got Castrol Edge, 0W30, fully synthetic. £44.99 for 4l and you get a 1l bottle free. im taking it to Mill Tyres in Boston 2moro morning for them to change it all for me while im at work. only charging me about a tenner. im really pleased with the overall price. and now i will have piece of mind when im driving back home on Friday. thanks for all your help guys, it really sorted me out, and reassured me. i checked on Halfords website, Europarts website and Castrols website, and they all recommended the Castrol Edge for my car, so i just went for it! ive only got 77k on the clock btw.
