Default Getting more and more confused about the brake set up I have on my GSi?

    Hi all!

My car is a 2002 Vec GSi (reg Aug 02 so believe it's an early one)

Decided to have a day on the car today sorting a few things out, front brake pad change primarily.

I order some Pagid pads but when I came to fit them, they were the wrong ones.

    See attachement 1

My ones are in attachment 2 and 3.

So you can see that each pad has a retaining clip whereas mine just has the one.

Now, I've read somewhere that early GSi's had 302mm discs and later ones have 314mm discs so perhaps the guy gave me pads for 314mm discs.

I thought I would measure the discs while the wheels were off and just check that theory but they seem to measure 314mm. Strange but ok, he must have given me the right pads (for 302mm) and I have the wrong set up.

So I came on here tonight and tried to see what I can find out about this and if you have noticed, you can make out the part number on attachment 3. Looks like 93178121.

The part numbers thread HERE shows the 314mm set up as 93176379. So now i'm confused!

I've also seen a thread with pictures of a 314mm set up HERE. The pads are like the ones I bought (so must be for 314mm?) and the calipers are different to mine. The nipples are at the top of the caliper on mine. They look like the ones in THIS thread and they're off a DTI .

So, please can some one put me out of my misery. Have I measured the discs wrong and it is a 302mm set up and I have bought 314mm pads? Or has the guy who had the car before me some how got 314mm discs under 302mm calipers which I cant see as physically possible?

Apologies for the long thread and thanks in advance for the replys!

Maybe a pic of your calipers to make sure? Sounds like you have an odd set up though

Looks like you have been given the 314mm pads.
Now I need a turbo to keep up!

    You're right - I'm confused too now...

Best option mate, get a pic of your calipers for us as there are 3 main typres for the front, and all look completely different to eachother. If you've measured the discs as 314mm then something very strange is going on if you don't have that setup...

    Cheers guys.

Can't get a picture just now but they look like attachment 1.

They're not the caliper in attachment 2 and 3 (same caliper) as the retaining spring is not the same.

What does the third one look like? lol.

2&3's are the 314's. Yours must be something else, probably 302's but would need someone else to confirm
Now I need a turbo to keep up!

In that case you definitely have the 302mm calipers, but I've no idea how you get 314mm discs under them...

Maybe this is new mod coming up...

It's possible I measured it wrong as the casing for the drive shaft nut meant I could not get a totally accurate measure, I guess were only talking a 1cm margin of error!

But what's more confusing is that the place I bought them took my Reg No to search the pads and he gave me those . Would have thought he couldn't get them wrong.

I have had the same thing happen with aux belts at a main dealer, took the reg number and got a belt for the 1.9 in for a 3.0. Mistakes do happen
Now I need a turbo to keep up!

Can any nice person search the part number of 93178121 which I guess will solve the mystery?
