Pedal trick is to check for stored fault codes. Doesn't work on Dti's though

If you are trying to clear a stored code then disconnect the battery for 15mins (make sure you have the radio code though)

The 'pedal trick' to which you refer is a method to cause stored fault codes to be displayed by counting the flashes of a dash lamp.

If you're trying to clear the current fault lamp (EML) then you have a choice of ignoring it until the car has had (typically) 20 'good' starts without that fault recurring whereby the lamp goes out by itself, or you can disconnect the battery for about 15 mins (1 hour usually recommended) which should cause the ECU to 'reboot'. Just make sure you have things like radio codes to hand before you try it in case you need them upon reconnecting.
