cost of replacing tyres

had a look round the siggy yesterday and noticed that the fromnt tyres are getting quite low , now i know there still legal but they will need replacing soon and i have the mot coming up in the next month


so i looked on the t'internet and priced up new tyres

at the moment it has eagle nct 5 all round so obviously i looked at the price of these

now i know £120 ish for decent tyres isnt bad but it actually works out cheaper for me to buy a new set of alloys ( ie bk999's ) with tyres than it is to just replace all the tyres

now whats the logic in that !!!!!!!

The tyres you get on the bk999s will only be about £50/60 each. I bought some BK999s a couple of years ago and they had Nankang NS2s on them which were actually OK, but a bit crap in the wet, definitely a budget tyre. Theyre not a patch on most decent premium tyre brands (ie Goodyear) .I also noticed they were as hard as nails, a really stiff sidewall, the tyres I have on now improve the ride massively.

If you do go ahead then I wouldnt buy NCT5s they are previous generation tyres, get something newer like Goodyear F1 Assymetrics for roughly the same price.

The Kumho KU31's are well respected on this forum too, and are a decent price too

as above -when buying a set of alloys unless you "upgrade" you will get budget rubber which means you will end up replacing fairly quickly so not as economical as you thought

Do yourself a favour and don't replace with more NCT5's.

Once you replace them with another make of tyre, you'll realise how bad the NCT5's were.

I can recommend Uniroyal Rainsport2's. Bags of grip, run a lot quieter than the NCT5, and the wear rate isn't too bad either. 9,000 miles on the front tyres and still had approx 5mm of tread left, before putting them on the rear - I'm not the slowest of drivers either. If you shop round you should be able to pick them up for around £80 a corner (not fitted, size 225/45/17). If you've currently got 215/50/17's then changing to the other size (225/45/17) will save you money as they're a more common size than the 215/50's.

Try places like camskill for cheap tyres. Those ntc5's are of unknown age

I found nankang pretty good. I would never pay full frice for a standard size tyre, i would go partworn for about 20quid a corner, u can get some good partworns if u look around

Well you pays your money and you take your chances...
I use only "premium" tyres, £100 per tyre fitted

Swapped from the Good Year 215/50R17 to 225/45R17 simply as the "original" tyres are £150 each

I've just had the Uniroyal Rainsport 2's on mine and I have to agree with BigDave 100%, they are far better than tyres three times the price, If you want to save some pennies look out for some Nexen's, they're a budget brand but they're better than Goodyear Eagle F1's (I had both on my beemer), last longer and better grip I found.

Do you get told of the history of the tyre(s) or just take a chance they're not from a written off car?
