Default Battery light and car with spanner icon?

As per the title, I am getting an intermittent problem, both the battery light and the car with a spanner light come on every now and again, bought a new alternator and battery, voltages fine, battery has the green indicator in the peep hole indicating fully charged, anyone got any ideas please? Seems to happen mostly when the engine is fully warmed up

    Cheers John

I would suggest getting the codes read. The spanner light coming on idicates that the ECU is picking up a fault. It will point you in the right direction.

There may be a member on here willing to read the code for your in exchange for some beers if you are lucky. Otherwise buy a code reader yourself or make a trip to an independent garage or Dealer.

Oh god scary thought going in for a diagnostics test, just out of intrest, would an alternator fault or battery charging fault bring up the spanner icon, because they both appear (battery and spanner) and dissapear at the same time, I have a flea bay reader, which only shows a fault code for my EGR which I have unplugged as it is ******ed.
Thanks for the pointer in any case

its odd that your reader isnt picking it up. I thought as soon as the spanner icon came at that means the ECU has picked up a fault and stores it. I believe the spanner has to be on a minute or so for the code to be permanently stored although someone else may wish to correct me on that.

When you use the code reader is the spanner light on or are you reading it after the event?

A couple of things spring to mind:

    • the alternator not charging the battery (as you have guessed) or the aux belt slipping which runs the alternator?
    • A short or bad earth some where.
    • Check that the cables to the battery are firmly connected.

I'm no mechanic but thats what I can think of off the top of my head. Hope that helps?

I would second this. Sounds like a faulty sensor on the engine. I had the spanner light come on recently (combined with random stalling during idling) and it turned out to be a dodgy crank angle sensor.
