Default CDTI 150, is it normal for it not to smoke ?

    Quick question chap's,

With the ongoing problems my dad's CDTI was having until the recent EGR Valve replacement, I noticed one thing, which was that when I used to floor it OR give it some serious welly, it NEVER EVER throws out any black smoke, like a normal Diesel usually does!?!?

Reason I ask this is that everyone always says you should give them a good boot now and again, to get rid of the crud, but on this it NEVER throws anything out.

My B DTI SRI throws out loads of black smoke (OK not loads but you can see it), but on the dad's CDTI 150 I never see any, regardless of how much I floor it, on take off or mid-range.

    Is this normal????

    Thanks.

Don't know what year your Dad's CDTi is G, but is it a late enough year that it may have a DPF? That would explain why no/very little smoke.

no smoke = happy days I reckon, excessive smoke is usually caused by an underlying problem, my 120 never smokes except a tiny puff first thing in the morning but thats caused by the daft cow I'm married to not letting the glow plug light go out before she fires it up from cold.

Is excessive smoke unburnt fuel? Mine don't smoke and I have EDS re-map.

    ...... !!!!

Love it mate. My old CDTI 120 used to smoke on start up, and as does my B. Like you say, no smoke should mean happy days.

Hey D, nice to have you back in touch with the forum.
Its a 2005/55 facelift. TBH, dont know if it has the DPF - im assuming it does as once when it went to Vx a year or so ago I was told it needed a DPF download (whatever the that was - probably a blag)!!

As everyone is saying though, sounds like it should be a good thing. Its just something I picked up on a few times so though i'd better ask and see what everyone else's does.

Compared to the CDTI 150, mine smokes like a chimney when hammered!

    No, its perfectly normal mate.

When you see diesels on the road smoking like crazy (usually Fords) this isn't normal at all - my dad can't get his head round that, he think there's something up with mine as it hardly smokes, but the Jags he drives (for his job) do all the time (rubbish Fords ).
