Take the TB off and syringe as much oil out of the manifold as possible. Then, take the breather off the cam cover, blank the intake side and put the other end in a clean cloth. Take it for a spin and see if much oil comes out the breather and if the blue smoke has stopped. Its quite common to find loads of oil in the manifold. Have you had the plugs out?

On the SE its not that big TBH, unbolt and unplug dipstick, TB, Vac lines, EGR pipe and ECU. I think in the Vec the fuel rail can stay in and then lastly unbolt the manifold. I'd imagine the YH would be similar but the manifolds totally different so couldn't really give you a good answer.

This is yours mate in the YH, the pipe marked as 1 is for the EGR, where it bolts to the head is another way of blanking the EGR, you just put a solid gasket in between the pipe and head mating surface. It works on the SE, who's going to be the first to try it on the YH..............Coke can and bobs your uncle, 2 minute job and no need to mess with the actual EGR.

Was thinking of an oil catch can but, apparently cant be vented to atmosphere as its a pressurised system so I would have to blank off the breather...

if its chucking blue smoke out the exhaust its burning oil, could be a number of things, valve stem oil seals, piston rings, blocked breathers, as you say its gunged up in the manifold, id take the manifold off altogether clean the life out of it so you can eat your dinner out of it, take out all the breather pipes and check them to see if they've gone sticky (you'll know what i mean if they have) if so replace them, if not give them a ruddy good clean up and if poss take the crank case breather valve out and give that a clean as well. Put it all back together and see how it goes, if its still smoking blue smoke its more than likely gonna be stem seals or rings.

The EGR bolts to the head, the gasses run through the head, then through the pipe into the manifold. You can get a blanking plate but it means messing about with the EGR, this way nothing is touched and its free to try so failure costs nothing.
