confused Screeching noise between 1800-2500 revs

    Hi All,

    Got a 56 plate Siggy 1.9 CDTi 150

Recently had an awful noise when revving between 1800-2500 revs, kind of a screeching - like a fan belt squeal, but much worse.

Had it into the garage cos my DMF was also shot and had hoped it was related, but not so. Mechanic tried the vac pipes and another pump - still not cured.

He thinks it could be turbo related - any ideas? Have just stumped up £600 for DMF and had a £1000 bill for inlet manifold/egr/etc at Xmas, so really don't want ore bad news an d general money pit misery

Have you noticed any change in performance or any smoke out the exhaust? You could check the alternator pulley as these fail from time to time and make the belt do some weird and wonderful stuff, i've even seen one throw a belt off altogether, when the engine is running have a good look at the belt as it comes off the alternator and see if its flapping about or jerky between pulleys, thats a good indication that the clutch pulley on the alternator is shot. If so replace the pulley, the tensioner and the belt and it should be like new.

Not noticed any change in performance per se - although when the screeching stops, there is a small burst in power like the clutch had engaged.

Will take a look at the alternator belt tho - cheers

If you want to check the turbo the only physical check you can do is remove the rubber/silicon hose off the turbo outlet to the intercooler and check for excessive bearing play by wiggling the shaft up and down etc, you could also spin it by hand to check it rotates nice and freely.

Picked the car up and the mechanic showed me the sound going when he takes of the vac feed (car runs like a slug, but no screeching), so their likely diagnosis is the turbo. He suggested that they only see problems with remapped cars

Would anyone like to comment? Also, can anyone recommend a good replacement turbo stockist if it is....

There's plenty of turbo places on the web, just play them all off against each other and see how cheap you can get it.
