USB is 5 volt NOT 12 volt, you will need a transformer to drop the voltage down or you'll blow the guts out of it.

I bought a multi voltage cigar lighter adaptor that I took the guts out of and hard wired into the centre console to run a portable USB hard drive with. Got it from Maplin.

cheers ill stick with using the cig lighter lead to power it thanks

    edit:

would this work? wire a cig lighter to the interiour light and plug the cig adaptor that has usb slot then put the usb lead into that?

The adaptor (the cig lighter plug) you've got will already step down the voltage for it, so yes, you can, as long as the cig plug of the adaptor is getting 12v (and the right polarity ie centre pin is positive), it will work fine.
