DMF vs Solid Flywheel

i'm going to be replacing my clutch very, very, very soon.
The mechanic i am using mentioned a solid flywheel to me as he said it was much cheaper than the dmf, very nice of him i thought, oh aye, he's my cousin, so he shoud be!

now i've been talking wih a few people and done a bit of searching on here. and came across 2 main poins for concern.

firstly that the solid flywheel is almost 3 times the weight of a dmf, surely this has got to have an affect on performance?

secondly, a shortened life expectancy of the gear box, maybe not in my lifetime of ownership, but never the less.

now before i had even posted this i'm kind of sold on the dmf, because a fellow member on here, and a mate of mine, has a solid flywheel fitted to his, and he reckons mine is more punchier than his, and that is with the clutch slipping.

the thing i'm asking about really is;

Is there any REAL benefit to fitting a solid flywheel?

other than price, as i would rather spend the extra money than loose performane/quality. as i'm struggling for performance anyhow.

i looked into it (not very far though) and went for a new dmf..

looks to me as you have already made you mind up.. if the solid flywheel just passes the stresses down the line and kills your gearbox its no brainer..

There is no benefit other than price of fitting a solid flywheel, as you mentioned the cons far outweigh the pros, the point of a DMF is to absorb some of the torque transmitted form the engine to protect the gearbox and drive train and to give smoother gear changes (i've never noticed a difference on that one tho), the DMF is what its meant to have for a reason so dont mess about trying to cobble together some mickey mouse conversion kit.

cheers guys, i'm sold. looking at an luk dmf on ebay for £330, how much should i be paying for a csc plate kit? wheres the cheapest?

Ive got a solid version on my pug 406 hdi, done over 20k and no probs at all, smoother gear changes and quieter..

yeah, i'm just gonna fit a dmf and plate, cant take the risk of slowing my car down anymore than it is. just hope it holds out til payday

Mine lasted 15k rattling its tits off before I could be bothered to change it so it should last for you no probs matey.

OR you could change the dmf for the set up from 3.0 td Vec or Signum it's good for 400NM of torque and this is from a member who works for BSR:.cool:

prove it, not like i need 400nm of torque like tbh, but its interesting never the less and cheaper
