    Default dmf to fail?

Does the DMF actually fail or does it just rattle?
mine has been rattling for 20k miles now?
i have a warranty direct but i have to pay 50% parts which im scared about if i claim it..
so should i just let it rattle away? i dunno what to do.

The thing with warranty companies is that if your DMF goes on to destroy your clutch and gearbox, they'll only pay for the original fault, and not the secondary damage caused by that. Their engineers will know what to look for!

    It's a difficult choice.

not heard of any dmf's destroying boxes on there way out.. I believe it was Benny who said this... think the worst it can do is to kill the clutch and lose all drive?

Hopefully. A new gearbox is £4K! I asked a VX mechanic last week if he had ever heard of a DMF going and he said no. Changed mine anyway just in case as vibrations through the car were starting to get bad, giving me pins and needles.

Thing is you have to remove the clutch to replace the DMF so you might as well put a new one on coz you pay over 5 hours in labour. Unfortunately this includes a new slave cylinder - quite pricey. VX quoted me £1441. £889 for parts and £388 for labout @ £72 per hour plus VAT. Took it to my local dealer instead and it's been there a week and has been a real pain. New master cylinder and now the 2nd clutch is being fitted...

Apparently there's a good place in Leeds that can do the whole job for less than £700. I was tempted to drive up there. Wish I had now. VX charge £550 just for the flywheel.

Hope you get it sorted mate. I'm off to the South of France on my hols if I ever get the car back am gutted that I've had to spend so much just before my holiday. Typical!

But some guy on here reckons that his had been rattling for 60K miles. Has anyone on here EVER heard of one actually failing and if so what were the consequences?

well like i said mine has been doing it for 20k and its not really that bad, you can hear it if the peddle is half pressed but it doesnt vibrate the car or anything.
ive not heard of one actually failing which is my problem, the warranty company will cover all labour charges but i pay 50% parts cost..

At 15000 the DMF and clutch went on my wife's Signum - it was less than 1 year old, After a dust up with VX Luton and photos to refute driver abuse - they replaced everyting FOC via a VX dealer who today is no longer a VX dealer. It has now done 43000 and is 3 months short of warranty expiry. VX dealer reports that it has a gearbox rattle and yes here is the catch - if it is a fitting error then I pick up the bill and battle it out with first dealer- if it is a component fault then VX sort it. Have put the first garage in touch with current VX dealer and asked the latter ot take photos on what is discovered. If it is fitment issue then they will invite first garage to see it - if they refuse then we take it from there.

It only went in for new gear assembly as gear knob keeps falling off!!

    More on this tomorrow.

If you're having the DMF changed you gotta change the clutch really, its a bit like changing brake discs, you always fit new pads as they'll wear to the discs, same theory really, the clutch will have worn to the old flywheel, plus it makes better financial sense to do the lot in one go save taking the box out twice.

They are fitting new dmf under warranty and new gear lever also under warranty because the knob keeps springing off.

They are putting old clutch back as it seems to be fine but I do take the point from last post - they say new clutch not needed.

Have to hope for the best on this now.
